I’m really having trouble figuring out lines with Phillips here.
Ruzicka-Backlund-Coleman can stay, it’s working
Hubderdeau-Kadri-Mangiapane, Huberdeau is not working with Lindholm/Toffoli, this gives him some players to open up the ice with a bit. Mangaiapane is deadly on his off wing, could be a fit.
Lucic-Lindholm-Toffoli, board dominant, with enough skill to get the puck to a shooter, idk on this one but maybe
Dube-Lewis-Phillips, sort of the best of the rest.
I think the coach will probably find a better fit than me for this problem. I just hope Phillips is playing with no more than one of Lucic-Lewis-Ritchie at a time and gets a good chance for a game or two to play with none of those three.

So with Rooney on waivers, assuming it goes through (who will claim him?) does it mean that the Flames will park him in the minors?
He is signed for this year and next. So it may be an expensive AHL player.

Will be interesting to see where he plays? Dube seems to have stepped up of late so I can't see him playing in the top 3 lines.
I bet he starts with Lewis and Lucic, but he could end up with a few games in the press box too.

This could be a cap move and rewarding a player with a pay cheque. This saves the Flames $500k on the cap...no guarantee he plays a bunch or more than 4th line minutes.
2nd PP does need to bump though I hope he gets a crack on it over Dube.

Even if I think its unlikely to make a huge impact - its a good move by the Flames just to reward someone for performing in the AHL and earning a call-up. Don't want people to feel like they are stuck down there forever no matter what they do.

There shouldn't be any guarantees...he has a shot now, earn a bigger one

Even if he does not play every game, he gets to practice with the team, his salary bumps from $140k to $750 and hopefully he gets a few games in.

If I'm putting lines together, they look like this:
Huberdeau-Lindholm-Toffoli
Mangiapane-Kadri-Coleman
Ruzicka-Backlund-Phillips
Ritchie-Dube-Lewis
I think the first line just needs to be left alone, Huberdeau brings a new dynamic to the game that Lindy and Toff haven't had. Johnny was great at finding the shooters with passes, whereas Huberdeau is great at putting passes into shooting lanes, it's up to the shooters to find the passes now. Let them build that chemistry.
Dube has been the weak link on the Kadri line, lots of bobbled pucks and missed assignments. Let Kadri be the puck carrier, and give him Coleman who can help slow a play down, while Mangiapane remains the trigger man.
Backlund and Rosey have looked good the last handful of games, Phillips should bring more skill and play driving ability to the line. good combination of Size, speed and IQ on this line.
The 4th line with Lucic and Lewis together has been getting caved in recently and trapped in their own zone alot, lack of skill and speed plays a big role there, Dube should be able to help there. Ritchie and Dube could be a solid combo as well, with Dube's tenacity and Ritchies size and strength going to the net. Maybe the 4th line can get back to controlling play in the O-Zone for a while.

He has earned the call up and I will be pulling for him to get a fair chance at showing what he’s capable of doing in the best league.
Not an easy gig, but he’s definitely got the skills and instincts.
He’s going to make mistakes, but he needs to be given the opportunity to learn and get used to the speed and size in the NHL.
Zero concerns about his mental make up or how he has been approaching his time in the AHL, the kid will be prepared to go.
