The Panthers saw a player who everyone describes as a unicorn become available and they made the move. They gave up 28, 29 year old players who required $7.6M in additional cap to re-sign until both are in their late 30’s and worked out a deal to get a 24 year old for 8x9.5.

I said from day 1 it was a win-win deal. Giving up the 1sts for 2 rentals was terrible but in hindsight they were the best team in hockey during the regular season so go all in. Giving up 1sts for Reinhart and Tkachuk who are mid 20’s former top picks were great moves. Florida has struggled to put a good team together so when they finally had one they went all-in with it. After a disappointing playoff they were able to add a sandpaper type player they felt they were missing.

Early returns looo great for the Panthers as Tkachuk is outpacing last years 104pt season. Meanwhile Huberdeau is pacing for less than half the points he scored last year and Weegar is putting up even worse stats offensively.

They have mid-late 20’s guys in Tkachuk, Barkov, Ekblad, Reinhart, Bennett and younger guys like Lundell and Knight. They just need to dump that Bobrovsky contract so they can add on the blueline but I like the future of the Panthers.

And for all the comments about their teams, both teams are 2 games above .500 and Florida has the better goal differential.
Hardest strength of schedule vs. one of the easiest

Flames lost Gaudreau in a separate scenario and were forced to trade Tkachuk based on geography

How exactly are the Panthers getting better down the road with no picks? They were the top team in the league. Panthers are missing Weegar big time.

I know points points points points are all that matters

Mony with almost as many points as Kadri also blows.

It wouldn't sting as much if the Flames were actually performing well as a team, but all of the above combined with the Flames not in a playoff spot is kind of pathetic.

Hopefully they get their #### together.
They are in a spot on points percentage...and with the remaining schedules they are far more likely to be a playoff team than the Panthers.

Flames are likely a divisional playoff team IMO

"Just" dumping Bobrovsky's is the problem. Zero percent chance that anybody would come near that even with retention. $14.5 million spent for the next three years on goaltending is really tough to build a championship roster. The good news is they have most of Yandle's $5 million of buyout charges coming off after this year. They should still be able to have a good team but maybe not great.

Lol, "just". A $10mil, poor back up goalie would be about one of the hardest contracts to move in NHL history. You could even offer to retain 50% of it, which would still handcuff your team and would still likely not get picked up by any teams.

I was unreasonably critical of Gio during his final 2 years here and thought he was done as a top pairing defenseman. Couldn't have been more wrong. Mea culpa.

Just 1 bad contract on the team. It will be tough to move but a lot of teams have bad deals so maybe they will be able to swap questionable contracts or suck it up and buy it out in the next couple of years.

Goalies are hot and cold. Bob has a bounce back year and all of a sudden that deal could be movable. Bob is the only active goalie with 2 Vezina trophies to his name.

Their top players are 21-27 I think they are in pretty good shape going forward.

The fact of the matter is, Tkachuk has played great, has a great contract, and looks to be at a great rate for the length of that contract.

The Flames certainly can't make the same claim.

There was a reason why the trade was made. many here thought the Flames had committed grand larceny. They failed to understand the value of a young star playing his prime years vs. paying huge amounts on many non-prime years.

Lets see how this pans out in the next 2-3 years. Even the next 2-3 months.

One thing i noticed about Chucky in the few games of I watched of him, he sure cherry picks alot and stays behind the play. Great for points. probably not great for defending.

I guess we'll see how Huberdeau pans out over the next 9 years.

That was always the understanding. The Flames have about a 4 year window to do damage before the contracts become anchors. Once they do, that's when it'll be time for the team to go into a rebuild or at least some sort of mini-rebuild. Finish low for 2-3 years to grab quality players in the draft, then get back to contending once the bad contracts are off the books.

I guess we will...you are the one calling it after 20 some games based only on points

If you took Weegar and Huberdeau out of the Flames lineup and added Tkachuk I 100% think they would be worse right now

Panthers had a presidents trophy winning team and decided to dismantle it because they lost in the 2nd round to Tampa, we will see how that works out for them. We are also ignoring the other two things they gave up.

The sum total content of your posts is gloating about players we had no chance to retain mixed with gratuitous slamming of the Flames at any opportunity. Take your tired schtick elsewhere.

I don't care how the Panthers, Habs, Jackets etc. perform as teams. I'm really just interested in the players.

That's great but how their teams are doing is certainly relevant

Easier to put up points on a team that doesn't care about defending or winning at all in some cases.

Valimaki getting dummied by Derek Ryan for a goal against. Yikes.

He was so good before the injuries.

He has good (in fact, great) defensive metrics relative to the rest of the Coyotes. If he keeps getting this much ice time, I hope he can build some momentum for himself.

Quite the "old friends" road trip coming up: Gaudreau/Gudbranson on Friday, Gio on Saturday (Brodie's injured unfortunately), and Monahan on Monday.
