well jsut this morning i booked a early april golf vacay for the wife and myself in palm springs.
We are there for a week and the plan is to golf 3 times.
Once we pick accomodations, I will then look for golf courses.
Starting in the new year I will have to bear down and make sure I go for some lessons and make sure I practice as it would be nice to limit the carnage to around 100 at each course
Will also ned to pick up a travel bag for the wife

So jealous! I have batted this idea around with some guys (a golf getaway this winter sometime) and no one seems too motivated yet.

Troon North rates for February, just before the Phx Open, are $669 USD right now - plus your water tax, etc. Yes, it's cheaper with a Troon card, but good luck getting tee times.
Golf is getting absolutely ridiculous down there.

We played Desert Willow last April on recommendations from this thread and it is beautiful. Highly recommend.
Books up long in advance to book up if you're wanting to play there.
Also played Indian Wells and loved it too.
Each of these courses were $200+round though.
Lastly we played Terro Lago which was good value for around $90 but I found it very difficult as a 20ish handicap.

I have an optishot and haven't used it in ages. I'd lend it to you but I'm in Vancouver.
This has actually reminded me that I want to sell it and it's sitting around collecting dust.
100% get the R10.

Anyone played Ko' Olina on Oahu?
We are going to Hawaii this Sunday and staying in Ko Olina for half our trip. Thinking to get in a round there.

Maybe this will provide you with an incentive, but we are going from a Wednesday to a Wednesday and I found a direct filth that leaves calgary at 10 am and then comes home at 1 pm for ~$400 return
I am hoping to find three courses where the green fees are about $100 US, and hopefully I don’t have to drive 100 miles
I figure that our next step is to find a place to stay, then look at golf courses.
I think we will rent a car while we are there, so we have flexibility to go out and about

Rent a car for sure. Will be worth it.
Also I’d expand your budget for golf for at least one course.

Troon Cards are on sale right now. I've never used them but my inlaws do. They say it gets you some pretty good deals on courses in the US.

Any value in the supposed Black Friday sales coming up at various courses around Calgary?
My inbox is filling up with invites for BF sales.
I am interested in a new (to me) set of Irons at the minimum.
Driving to the Hamptons though would remove a bit of the savings...LOL

Unless they are specific to a state make sure they get the National card. You can buy a card to your resident state that is cheaper and many places that sell them usually make this the default. Have them confirm they are getting the national card so they get the benefits across the country.

to be honest, i am hoping my wife decides she only wants to golf twice, this will make it easier for me to want to go to a nicer course and maybe pay $200 versus having to pay $400.......
i also want to make sure i make a trip to in and out burger as on past trips to the US I put off going there, and then circumstances did not align and made it difficult to go

Get her to drop you off somewhere and tell her to head to the outlets at Cabazon.

I'm not sure that ends up in a net savings of money!

If you're not too picky about courses and want good pricing, use the Golfnow app and book last minute discounted rates.
But I agree with others that it's worth indulging on at least 1 really nice course, and those you should book early.
If you're insane, you can also book afternoon rounds for much cheaper because no one else wants to play in that heat.
You definitely need a car in the Palm Springs area, things are very spread out but easy to drive to.

i am going to have to juggle the potential for savings by going the last minute booking route versus paying more to have something locked in ahead of time.
i am fortunate in that doing stuff in the heat really does not impact me. and I'd assume that we will be taking a cart.
based on my previous visit to PS, it seems the issue with afternoon tee times is the wind really seems to pick up

Played Ko Olina on Oahu today.
Good course, pretty forgiving but long at 6432 from the whites. Enjoyed it and would definitely play again, but wouldn't rank it up there with the vacation rounds I've played in Palm Springs.
Used rental clubs which were all TM Stealths and really liked the irons. I usually play TM M6 so they felt familiar but better. Hit some great shots with my 4i, 5i & 7i that I'm still thinking about.
I use TM Sim woods and didn't feel any extra benefit with the Stealths; not tempted to upgrade there, but the irons got me thinking.

^ that is one reason why i would try to avoid renting clubs. i'd hate to find the rental set helped me more than my current set

At least things felt similar for me being a Taylormade guy.
My playing partner games Pings and found things very different. He struggled with his distances a lot.
But both traveling with babies for the first time, there was suddenly no more room for golf clubs

Saw this and was amazed the crap people will do. Group claimed to have shot 46 in a four man scramble.
https://www.reddit.com/r/golf/commen...eb2x&context=3
This took place at Hampton Cove on the Highlands course of the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail. Bitchin' tough golf course that challenges the absolute best golfers. Having played it, no way is that score possible.
What's the lowest you've been involved with in a scramble?
Lowest I've ever done was with a group of club pros and we shot 52. That also included us taking long drive and three of the proximities on the four par threes. We had two eagles and birdied everything else. This was not a fair contest by any stretch of imagination, but it was a charity event for a kids shelter and all prizes and money we won were donated to the cause.
Lowest in a 2 man scramble was 58. Myself and a buddy, who is plus, played together because our games really compliment each other. We were pretty pumped coming off the course but were crest fallen pretty quick when a 53 came in. We questioned it, but the groups behind and in in front of the winners validated the score. Also found out one guy played on the ASU golf team and his buddy was a guy from what is now the Corn Ferry Tour. When you get the right talent together a low score can be in the books.
46 though??? Hole-in-one on the hardest hole on the course, an albatross on another, four eagles, and birdies on the rest. Not buying it.
