Canmore has close proximity to Calgary which is something the Crowsnest Pass will never have. You know how many times I have heard that things will change there? Since the 90's I've heard that and it never changes and in fact it's just getting worse and worse. No new development ever happens there as mainstreet Blairmore has been left to die. One of the problems with a municipality is that you have four towns that can't ever agree on anything so nothing gets done. Decades ago they could have had an indoor pool in Blairmore but the other towns wanted it in their down so nobody gets an indoor pool. As you&me said, it's a dump and it's getting worse as time goes by. Nobody is going to ever commit the hundreds of millions of dollars to developing that place because it's too far from a major city.

Yep, this is my move, although I have a wardrobe in my office so I can also switch out a heavier shirt for an office shirt as needed. The go-to for me is - Mountain Hardwear tutka warm pants which I bought about 6 pairs of when they were discontinuing them
- A heavier shirt (North Face Arroyo and Mountain Hardwear Granite Peak or Plusher are good quality for price)
- Some form of long johns (Kombi Redheat are comfortable synthetic ones I find; merino wool is too pricey)
- Snow boots of some description (North Face, Kodiak, Kamik, whatever... I'm using North Face Cryos boots currently)
- A warm puffy (I use the Patagonia hyper puff that they used to make - closest is now the Fitzroy except it's down, not synthetic) and
- Good insulated mitts that can still be used to actually grip things (I use the Outdoor Research Stormbound Sensor).
If it's like -10 to -15 you don't need all that and there are lots of things that are perfectly livable, but once starts going the direction of -20 or colder, that's the type of armor I think you want in this province.

Yeah but how about that traffic? It seems no matter how early I leave, it’s all backed up already. This city’s highway infrastructure is meant for like pop of 500,000.

Amazing jackets though. I’m jealous.
Don’t know if they still do, but Uniqlo had some for a while. More of a chino style, so if your office is more suit and tie it might not play, but seriously one of the best winter clothing choices I’ve made.

I got a Point Zero winter coat last year that's good to -40. It's so warm all I need is a T shirt on underneath before a walk and I'm good in -20, and I'm a skinny azz who's always cold this time of year. Actually blows my mind its that warm for the price.
It's only flaw is the hood doesn't go well past your face like CG ones do, so if it's windy blowing sideways, you'll need a scarf. Otherwise, it was an absolute steal from the Bay.

It's weird how CG manages to get all this status as the "best brand" for city winter jackets. It's basically a well-built fashion / status brand. The coats are good, but the value really isn't there and it doesn't even make a ton of sense to wear something that heavy in Calgary where it's so dry. It's just the wrong type of coat for this city.
And if you wanted a heavy, "no cold can touch me" parka there are obviously better options as well as many cheaper options that do the job just as well. It's just a weird way to spend money unless you just happen to like the look of it.

A good puffy jacket is just fine. Spend the money on good gloves.

It’s only a matter of time before a rock slide takes out one of the towns…then a simple town democracy will work.

Yeah Frank but that's the smallest town with no pull. They would also lose their sewage treatment facility which would be bad.

I bought an Eddie Bauer "bomber" type winter jacket last year. It's identical to their parkas, just shorter in length. I think it's stylish and warm AF. Plus, I was able to get in a tall version because, get this, I am tall. The sleeves are plenty long enough, it's great.
EDIT: This one. https://www.eddiebauer.ca/p/10112576...&sizeType=Tall

I wear an Eddie Bauer down vest inside of a Columbia fall jacket with the heat reflecting stuff. At -20C without major wind, it's just right. Below -10C or if I go indoors without taking it off, I start sweating like crazy. I think I paid less than $100 for each.
I also have a Columbia down winter jacket as well. Paid less than $200 for it a few months ago because discount + circle rewards friends and family discount code + new credit card gave an insane discount on it. But even at full price, it's only around $400-500 ish which is no where near the cost of Canada Goose.
Then pants (long johns, snow pants, fleece lined etc.) are less than $100 easily.
The key to staying warm is easy. Layers. Most people should be able to stay warm up to -25C for less than $500 without too much difficulty.

I'm just going to dive in here and defend my line of thinking on the CG jacket. I grew up poor, which meant not great winter jackets, boots and gloves. As a result, I'm a sucker for buying good jackets now. Do I need a parka like that? Maybe, maybe not. But I won't skimp on jackets/boots/gloves as an adult because I had too many days "suffering" without what I consider proper gear growing up.
Thankfully, that Eddie Bauer jacket posted earlier is a bomber because I prefer the longer jacket...otherwise I'd probably consider it!

YKWRGMG I have consistently been shoveling both of my neighbours sidewalks when I am out shoveling my own driveway.
I do it because it's a nice thing to do but I also hope that maybe if I'm not there to shovel one evening that they would repay the favour.
I got home late from work last night and both of their sidewalks/driveways were shoveled but both stopped at the property line.
So instead I had to shovel compacted snow at 10pm instead of them taking 2 extra minutes to do a favour for me.

Certainly. But I think the point that most are stating is need vs want and value. Someone can stay warm for half the cost of the Canada Goose jacket, easily. You know you're splurging vs thinking you "need" the premium jacket to stay warm. That's the difference. I don't think anyone has an issue with your line of thinking. The issue they have is that some people consider CG to be the go to minimum standard which is dumb.
I've worn the CG jacket too. It was decent value in the $500-600 range when it was sold at the Bay. Now that it's publicly listed and have their own stores, at $900-1200 for the same jackets, it's poor value. Poor value does not mean poor performance.
There's nothing wrong with the CG jackets. It's the concept of people saying, "It's the only thing that will keep you warm during Calgary winters." which is wrong. CG jackets are also not great for skiing and snowboarding. It's fine, but not great.
