They'll probably explain, but this isn't 'Golden Goal' scenario right? IE: we have to go at least 30 more mins (15 + 15) correct?

that's correct
they tried golden goal in the late 90s, 2000s and they found teams way to scared to attack.

Right, it's the France '98 tourney I recall which had the Golden Goal. TBT, this is the most focused on a WC I've been since 1998. Partly because of Canada, but also for the chance to watch this one whilst (trying) to work.
I can see how sudden death would cause teams to defend stubbornly to a Penalty shootout.

Well he is creeping up towards 40 so I'd say 100 minutes on the back of all the games he's played was already asking a lot. Still 20 to go so you've gotta have fresh legs when a lapse defensively could mean you're out.
I'm more surprised to see Kovacevic is out, wasn't watching there but he's been a rock for them
Croatia for me are a side that really fall off quality wise past their 11 and Japan look exhausted so I could see pens here, though a quick Japanese counter still wouldn't shock me either they've looked the better side in attack to me

I loved that interaction between Japanese defender and keeper.
Defender is going to clear and very obviously hears his keeper's shout for the ball and hits the deck and lets his keeper collect.
Wonderful stuff.
This Japanese keeper owns his space and I like that.
