So you are arguing with factual numbers? Go have a look He absolutely is but feel free to make up your own narrative. He is statistically better than Weegar in every way. Argue it all you like but the facts are the facts. .

Weegar has no goals, 6 assists and is +4 on a high end hockey team. Valimaki has 1 goal, 4 assists in 6 less games and is +3 on the worst roster in the league. So laugh all you want but he absolutely has outperformed Weegar so far.

My point is not that Valimaki is a better D man than Weegar right now in actual skill level, my point is that Jiri saying he will be at best a bottom pairing D man on a bad team and all the other bad takes he had there is pretty inaccurate. He still has plenty of upside and I think we absolutely will regret keeping Mackey over him.

Do the Flames look like a high end team right now...also Vali playing pp and sheltered 5 on 5 minutes not against other teams top players. 1 even strength point

On paper they absolutely are. For the record I think Weegar should definitely be playing PP time over a guy like Hanifin. Like I said, not saying Valimaki is a better player than Weegar but projecting him to be a bottom pairing D man like Jiri did is where I took issue. I think the Flames did a poor job handling Valimaki. I think they are doing a poor job in not giving Phillips a look. I think these are the negative things that D Sutter brings. Do the positives with Darryl outweigh the negatives? For sure but it isn't all roses with this guy.

Weegar is still finding his way on a new team that plays a different, more details-oriented style. His numbers will pop sooner or later. With how horrible Juuso is in his own zone, he depends on being sheltered, and Weegar is still well ahead of him in his defensive game.

I do agree that it's often frustrating how Sutter doesn't give certain players a chance, while giving certain others a longer leash. It's still a young man's game, you have to give your youth a chance.

If Jusso is so bad defensively how is he +3 on the Coyotes? Not saying Valimaki is better defensively but you can't be that horrible in your own end to be a + player on the worst roster on paper in the entire league.

No argument there.

Exposing Valimaki on waivers was 100% a cap decision. Keeping him would have used up all the cap space on the team and they were committed to league minimum guys to round out the roster.

We can argue the wisdom of that for sure but I think his fate was decided quite some time ago.

He is averaging 17:28 a game. Weegar is averaging 21.09.
So Weegar is averaging 4 minutes more a game on a much better team.

Back on topic. Phillips has another two points tonight and we aren't even at the midway mark of the second period.

Wouldn't BT have some say in calling up Phillips (or anyone else for that matter), or does Sutter just call the shots now?

Sutters comments regarding Phillips sounded a bit personal which is odd, either way they weren't encouraging.

It's interesting in sports that we rely on scouting for choosing players and quite often find that scouts are proven to have been wrong once the player is given some NHL icetime.

Yet knowing the system is imperfect it is often relied upon to decide who will become an NHLer from the AHL and who won't, often without giving the player any meaningful NHL icetime.

While it is likely the system is more often right than wrong, it will at times be wrong and begs the question of just how many players could have had NHL careers but never made it out of a specific teams farm?

BT has all the power when it comes to call ups. That does not mean Sutter will play them though.

Folks are acting like it's Sutter not calling him up though.

It would be peak Flames to never give Phillips a shot, spend assets to bring in a player at the trade deadline, the deadline acquisition completely busts, the Flames bow out in round 1 or 2, Phillips walks in the summer to another team, and has success on that team for the next several seasons while the Flames continue to flounder in mediocrity, Coronato refuses to sign, and several Flames top prospects demand trades out of town.

I'm sure Tre and Sutter both confer about call-ups.
