Germany, Denmark, and Belgium out in the groups. Italy didn’t even qualify. Think that’s 2, 6, 10, 11 in the FIFA world rankings and some of the top European teams that are gone before the knockouts.

I guess if I’m Spain I’d rather face Morocco than Croatia.

Tanking is mostly about avoiding Brazil in the QFs, Morocco have looked much better than Croatia so far.

If we would have finished 2nd in our group we would have got to play Japan for a trip to the QF. Damn.

Updated bracket. Teams in brackets are most likely

Netherlands vs USA
Argentina vs Australia

Japan vs Croatia
(Brazil) vs (Ghana)

------------------------

England vs Senegal
France vs Poland

Morocco vs Spain
(Portugal) vs (Switzerland)

That ball was clearly over the sidelines. Germany got screwed. It's all over the BBC right now and the German players are incensed over the call.

Spain would have let Japan score again.

TSN showed a replay that it was NOT clearly over the line

Every camera angle I see it looks clearly over the line, as one commentator put it, you can see clear green around the ball.

However, they are adamant that the sensors in the ball indicate that it was still in the field of play.

Its like an optical illusion!!

But it wouldn't have mattered, Spain were tanking and would have let them score anyway. Easy enough situation to rectify, although you'd have to extend the tournament to do it, but just re-draw after the group stage. Kinda amazed FIFA hasn't done it already, the knockout stage draw would be a massive TV event, and even more money for them.

The ball is round so you can see green but a part of the ball might still be on the line. This isn't seeing green like a receiver's foot.

They showed the angle where the camera is right on the line, and it definitely looks like it stayed in.

I think the problem is travel and ticket sales. Qatar is a small place but in 2026 how in the world are teams and fans going to move around without an idea of there they're going? You could be in Seattle or Monterrey! You'd need a week between the group stage and the knockout. Champions league there are weeks between each draw.

Don’t they have the same issues now? Sure your options are reduced vs a full new draw but you could still be in a totally different location if you finish 1st ca 2nd in the group.

Or no location at all if you don’t qualify.

Contingency planning will always be a required for the knockout rounds.

I think most people would love a knockout stage draw with 2 pots of the first place and second place teams; only issue is you'd potentially run into teams with 1 day of rest playing teams with 3 or 4 days of rest.
