Good writeup

Tanev …
What the hell was Vancouver thinking.
Honestly?
I don’t get it.
|
Couldn’t agree more. It’s just bizarre. I didn’t realize what we were getting but hot damn, this guy is good. Just solid every night. Flames are a different team with and without him.
Vladar up to about a .913 on the season and finally gets rewarded with the W
I didn’t find the Tkachuk response odd
Tribute. You were a Flame. Yay!
Game on. You aren’t a Flame. Boo!
As it should be

A better question is...what is a guy like Tanev worth? There is no real comparable for him in the league in my mind. His deal is up at the end of next year, what's the AAV on his next deal?
He's the first player that I've ever wanted to watch make defensive plays, because he does it at such an elite level.

I’ve said it before. Tanev is the best unrestricted free agent signing in the teams history (not including prospect signings like Otto and Gio)

I feel like Leaf’s fans say this about Brodie too. I saw praise for Gio recently too. Tanev is great and a warrior no doubt.

Always thankful for your write up's but the special moment tonight was when the fans started chanting Huby's Better at the dome. Quite funny.

This is what happens when your goalie is better than the the other guys goalie.
Vladar xGA 2.48 and he only gave up 2
Bobrovosky xGA 2.9 and he let in 6
Pretty close to an even game with the skaters but the goalie plays the whole game.
Markstrom on the season has give up 47 goals and the team in front of him played to a level where he was expected to give up 42.13
That is 24th in the league among starting goalies (12 games or more)

Good one. Hamrlik was pretty good too, too bad he wasn't signed for longer.
Also I thought the Tkachuk fan reaction was just right. Don't boo the tribute but if booing is your thing, do it during the game.

You won't get much argument on this attempt ... Calgary goaltending hasn't been great.
The site I use for goaltenders (moneypuck) has it closer though.
Markstrom is 47 allowed vs 47.1 expected for +0.1
Vladar is 18 allowed vs 18.8 expected for +0.8
That's less than one goal of "help" all season between both goaltenders, which I highlighted yesterday in the pregame topic.
Also interesting ...
Markstrom down a man?
8 allowed vs 12.47 expected +4.5
Markstrom five on five?
31 allowed vs 28.82 expected -2.2
Markstrom other? (not short handed or five on five)
6 allowed 4.36 expected -1.6

I always had Hudler and Frolik on the good lists as well.

Question for Bingo: Did Vladar do enough last night to deserve to start against the Habs?
He's been giving the Flames the best chance of winning lately, don't you have to ride the hot hand sooner or later?

Maybe he's more dialed in on the powerplay. It seems when he's not getting a lot of work he loses some focus at times. It seems almost all the soft goals are 5 on 5.

He deserves it and better yet, in Sutter world he earned it. Got to go with the hot goalie with the other guy having to earn back his stripes.

There are others too, but the list is relatively small.
Makes one wonder if teams would be better served by not wading into the UFA pool as much.

Would you add Wideman to the list? I get they traded for his rights, but he was pretty solid until the incident with the linesman, especially in 2014-15.

I would think so, yeah.
But then there has to be an off ramp for that thinking too or you tank your starting goaltender.
Maybe Montreal is an "easier" game to get Markstrom a win and not have him sitting for too long. He hasn't played since Friday afternoon.

I've always wondered how you would do if you just refused to sign any player past the age of 33.
Full stop.
Lose your own players if they don't take shorter terms.
Walk away if UFAs won't take lesser term.
You'd get a lot of rejection but have way more cap space flexibility.

Markstrom's career record against Montreal is decent. The Caps are up after that and his stats are bad. And he wasn't great last weekend against them. if you want to get Markstrom back in there, tomorrow is the time. Give the Caps to Vladar. IMO.

Where does Markstrom rank in Moneypuck?
How many times has he been the better goaltender head-to-head?
