Seriously, what is more likely, this team continuing the way they are (or worse) or figuring it out and being just fine? I am 100% on the latter.

So many people complained that there was no adversity last year, yet when there is some, everyone wants to throw themselves into traffic!
Same as everyone said it would take time to form chemistry and for the new players to learn to play Sutter style. Apparently that meant 15 games or under.

Yean no it wouldn't be.

You don't want any of your core players out long term in a season with aspirations.

Markstrom's best chance to turn it around certainly isn't on LTIR.

So looking at Flames goaltending this year

21 games

Rounded to a goal Goals Expected - Goals Allowed

-3 Goalie stinks - 1 (Vladar 1, Markstrom 0)
-2 Goalie poor - 2 (Vladar 0, Markstrom 2)
-1 Goalie Below Avg - 4 (Vladar 0, Markstrom 4)

Total 6

+0 Goalie Breaks Even - 8 (Vladar 1, Markstrom 7)
+1 Goalie Making Difference - 3 (Vladar 1, Markstrom 2)
+2 Goalie Game Star - 1 (Vladar 1, Markstrom 0)
+3 Goalie Steals Game - 2 (Vladar 1, Markstrom 1)

Total impact is zero goals ... average goaltending

Vladar one poor game, one average, two stellar
Markstrom six poor games, seven average, three great

But only 4 of 21 games where goaltending positively included a game, two against Pittsburgh ironically.

Well I was more hoping for Lucic. Regardless if they’re not going to bring up a forward it would be okay if something forced their hand on it. Like I think we saw some decent okay from defence when Tanev and Stone was out and I think that will help those players long term. Shame Mackey didn’t step up but the others did. But I’d be fine doing with Lucic what Edmonton did with Smith. Would give more space to make a trade and give more cap room to promote callups. Ofc it’s not going to happen and I don’t wish injury on anyone. I just want something to change and them to realize that Lucic and Rooney and Ritchie just aren’t viable anymore. Lewis well he PKs and does some more stuff so I’m okay with him.

Kind of a pivotal game. Sutter mentioned in the pregame interview they have to be .600 now to make it.

I'd be interested to see what the offensive output was in those 14 games with average - great goaltending vs the poor goaltending.

It feels like most of the time the Flames have a big scoring game, the goaltending falters. This makes me feel like much of that surrounds the system breaking down more than the goalies just being plainly bad in those outings.

I have a hunch we see differences to Sutter's system tonight vs last game. We're into the 2nd quarter of his roadmap to the team playing cup winning hockey going into the playoffs.

Lines more where we'd expect them to be for the next tier of offensive strategy. He's slowly releasing the horses.

No one wants to have injuries happen but there are franchises across all sports that have been transformed by an injury to what was considered a key player. Then a blocked player comes up and does even better and changes the direction of a team. You generally see this more often in single position roles like quarterback and goalie when the starter tends to take all the reps but it’s happened in other roles as well.

I just don’t see Sutter budging here. Sure we can talk about Toffoli with LA but since he’s joined the Flames again he’s been very happy with his vets and doesn’t give young players a shot. I hope to be proven wrong but I just don’t see Sutter changing unless forced. Trev doesn’t seem to want to take his toys away so I don’t know what can bring young players up.

I don't understand the systems bit this is hockey most teams deploy the same style it's not like he's going to be calling plays. Okay boys here is the new playbook this isn't football or Basketball.

We can involve the defenceman more but it's more about his player deployment and rolling 4 lines like it's a joke or something. We need better bench management and the players to fight to get into the slot and score inside. It's how we scored last year and thought this year but the team seems to play along the boards way too much, feels like the Dallas series we make it easy for the other team to check is because we are easily boxed out or just won't go into the slot.

Training camp: “Ok, whichever of you has the puck, dump it in the corner. Forwards go get it. Defence; keep the other team from scoring! Now go to it!”

Season: “These are tonight’s line combinations. Now go to it!”

Playoffs: “Good work team. Now go to it!”
