It guts me that a team that finished below us in the CONCACAF WC qualifying table go on to the Round of 16. But here we are.

West germany v austria 1982

Known as the Disgrace of gijon

They knew both would advance with a 1 or 2 goal west german win because earlier game played by Algeria and Chile was finished, west germany went up by 1 early, rest of the game they basically passed the ball back and forth

Since then, always same time

Looking forward it's not a terrible bracket for the US. Netherlands aren't world beaters by any means and then they would face who? Argentina maybe?
Or there could be a Poland/Australia round of 16 match. Either way, the US aren't playing the likes of Brazil, France or Spain yet.

Group draw makes such a big difference. Replace Canada with Mexico, OR US in their groups and they might get to round of 16th.

Them and Costa Rica both got tough draws for sure.

In the end they should have beat Belgium though and should be playing for a spot in the round of 16 on Thursday, but that's how the ball bounces sometimes.

That has to be the end of the Golden Generation of Wales football though.

Agreed. I was even thinking that Brazil group would have been lovely to be in.

I love CR, but they got in by the skin of their teeth. Canada was much better qualified.

Which seems to have bitten us in the ass.

Canada moving up the rankings would help with the draw somewhat.

US and Mexico wins against other federations can only help.

I hope the Dutch absolutely squash the Americans.

Judging what we've seen from this Dutch team in this tournament I wouldn't get your hopes up too much but I am hoping they put it together somehow finally

You guys are confusing qualification results with tournament results. Sure it was nice to win the OCHO but at some point Mexico and the US didn't really care about that. It's kind of like winning the Presidents Trophy in the NHL.

The World Cup is a beast and it takes getting used to. The US or Mexico, and even Costa Rica, no matter how poor they seem to be playing, have pedigree to get our of group stages, although Mexico won't get out this time after 7 times in a row.

Canada's midfield and defensive play was quite naive. I'm not sure they would have gotten out of any group, which is fine. The Brazil group was mentioned, no way Canada is getting a result against Switzerland or Serbia. Canada got the luckiest draw probably with how bad Belgium are.

This was an very experienced field, Qatar were the only debutants and Canada and Wales after so many years were also practically debutants.

I've watched Korea play in 10 consecutive world cups and they still can't get anywhere. They've only advanced twice, 2002 as hosts and 2010.

The Americans could be without Pulisic and that's a wound they don't want going into the weekend.

Sounds like Pulisic was taken to hospital for an abominal injury

Also for all the world cups the US and the Dutch have been too, this will be their first meeting.

Pulisic rolls around and acts like his leg has come off twice every game I've ever watched him play so that was a bit of a boy who cried wolf moment but hopefully nothing serious

I agree with plenty of this, but the US and Mexico were fighting in the Ocho right down to the end. Canada won the group and even we didn’t qualify until the last window.

I agree about the midfield. That is a big area of weakness for us, and it showed against bigger competition. We can get away with a 2 man midfield against our usual competition, but not at this level. The US has a much better midfield then we do.
