At some point they may have to call someone up, but don't hold your breath on it being Phillips. Treliving, same as Sutter, is a stubborn, defiant sort. He will not be pressured into any decision, no matter how much it makes sense. The fact that he's a Calgary kid probably makes it worse for Phillips' chances, as dumb as that is. The more heat to call him up, the less chance it will happen.

Treliving is not going to sabotage his team’s chances (including his own career) because he is rebelling against the will of the people. This isn’t who he is. Treliving will call up Phillips at the time that he believes best suits the kid and the team. He’s not going to hold off because he’s resisting heat put on him by fans. That’s just dumb.

However he might not call him up because he knows Sutter won’t employ him properly. And given Sutters love for vets and how Sutter deployed Phillips and Milano in the preseason it’s likely not unwarranted. Trev I think is now beholden to the coach he hired and likely is making decisions that please Darryl. Bringing Phillips up and stapling him to Ritchie and Lucic will fail.

I agree that Treliving may not bring him up if he is put in a role that doesn't work for the kid. To be honest, if now is not a good time for Phillips, I'm not sure when would be a good time.

Not that I am suggesting doing this but, if the team can't find a space for him at this point, it might be better to trade Phillips so that he can play for a team that will allow him to get ice time. It seems unfair to bury him in the AHL regardless of his success. If he will never be a fit for this team, move him.

In 13-14 the Kings were going through the same thing with a wilted offence. Half way through the season they brought up Tofolli and Pearson and played them on the 2nd line and it gave the offence life that carried on through the playoffs and right to the cup. All of the definitive statements that Sutter will never bring up kids and play them are false based on this. He will see what he has here and give it time to work but will bring up players if he finds it necessary if history tells us anything.

Never would have guessed this, spells good news for later down the road this season (I hope).

Toffoli and Pearson were both over 6' and 200 pounds. That's where we run into problems. Sutter loves the beef and playing the heavy cycle oriented game up front. Smallest guy from the Kings that year that played regularly was Mike Richards.

Kopitar - 6'3, 225
Carter - 6'3, 219
Williams - 6'1, 184
Richards - 5'11, 199
King - 6'4, 232
Toffoli - 6', 203
Brown - 6', 205
Stoll - 6'1, 216
Gaborik - 6'1, 200
Lewis - 6'1, 201
Nolan - 6'3, 235
Clifford - 6'2, 217
Pearson - 6'1, 201
Frattin - 6', 205
Carcillo - 6', 205
Frasier, 6'1, 191

Linden Vey (5'8, 194) did play 18 games for the Kings that year, but was not in the Kings' plans, being sent packing to the Canucks in the off season. Sutter likes his players big. Are we going to expect the team to add more small players, or try and get beefier? If you want to look at historical trends, we have to consider this as well.

Which is why I’m fine with Zary or Pelletier. We just need someone up here to push people out of the lineup. Phillips is certainly deserving but this isn’t a meritocracy.

Pearson and Toffoli don't play big hockey, they play a skill game.

Also, the Kings made two significant adds on those cup teams Gaborik and Carter.

Bring up Philips, Zary and Pelletier and play each on one of the top 3 lines

Huberdeau-Lindholm-Philips
Pelletier-Kadri-Toffoli
Zary-Backlund-Coleman
Mangiapane-Ruzicka-Dube

Give it a shot and see what happens. Maybe a little youth will be what this team needs to bust out?

^I don't think they have the cap space to do that right now (yeah i know they could waive some guys).

I'd take one of them being called up.

Just bury Rooney. Sutter doesn't like using him, he'll either find some form below or get taken.

Ol Scorp getting the credit in this tweet of dooooooom

…I mean, that ain’t great. Certainly not establishing a reputation for “letting the kids play”.

Coronato can't be oblivious to the facts.

I have serious concerns about Coronato now singing with us with this coach here.

Yeah don’t see why a star undersized skill player who’s young would want to play here. He knows he’ll likely get buried in the AHL for years. Better to force his way to other team and go straight to the NHL. But the no draftees since 18 is a joke. I mean likely the players won’t be great or anything but it isn’t a stretch to say they can be better than Ritchie or Lucic. Enough have played well enough to get a shot.

If I was Coronato, no chance would I sign with the Flames. Could majorly destroy your chance to make the NHL. Back to the draft for me. What we are seeing is that even if NHLers are playing very poorly, you still wont even be given a chance.

The team simply does not give enough rope to prospects and too much rope to poor performing NHLers. It doesn't matter if a couple of these plugger guys get picked up on waivers (could be a good thing and secondly they won't anyway).

Actually getting past the point of stupid now that no prospects have been recalled. Like, very obvious poor management at this stage. Kind of unbelievable in fact.

Coronato and all rookies in the A need to worry about their careers which the Flames are ruining. You should be given a chance, especially with poor performing NHLers taking it all for granted.

University players don’t re enter the draft, the sign or become free agents

Sutter isn't the GM. If a player gets called up and doesn't get a shot, that's Sutter. Not getting called up is Tre. Now, Sutter and Tre have a good relationship, but if Tre wanted to do a power move, he could send down Rooney and bring up Phillips and Pelletier, and the ball would be thrown in Sutter's court.

Tre has brought in questionable vets his whole tenure, it's the most frustrating part of his team building.
