If someone taunted me and I pretty much just spiked the ball in their face I think its totally natural to throw it back at them.
Herdman said it. Herdman owned it. What Croatia do is up to them, but if an opponent taunts you like that and when game time comes you dummy them...its totally acceptable to throw that back in their face.
Couldn’t agree more. Rather pathetic to lose and then complain when the victor reminds you of your words. If you can’t deal with that, then maybe competitive sports aren’t for you.
Sounds like some unrest is the Belgian room also. I don’t know the exact quotes, but De Bruyne said they were too old to win a World Cup yesterday. Then, after the loss today Jan Vertonghen said something like “are we too old to attack?”
Oh, thats interesting. But yeah, Belgium are falling into the trap that I thought Croatia would fall into which is overplaying their 'Golden Generation.'
That being said, Vertonghen should probably check his comments. Their defending has been atrocious. Although they are still great in the air.
When you field an entire back line of antiques against a young, vibrant and attacking team you're going to find life difficult.
Vertonghen and Alderweireld are amazing players with wonderful CB chemistry....4-5 years ago.
Granted, I look at Belgium's front lines and they should be better than they have been. They're losing in the middle of the pitch because they're expecting de Bruyne to do it all.
This is on Martinez.

If you thought this season would have a happy ending, you haven't been paying attention.
Yeah, of course Croatia is going to throw it back at them - it's deserved. But it's great that we have our first official World Cup rivalry!
I think Canada (Herdman) misplayed their hand - not with the comments specifically, but with the bravado overall. This is Canada's first real glimpse at competitiveness, and everyone knew we don't have the depth to go toe to toe with the big boys.
Canada should have come in quietly and humbly (outwardly).. Of course they want to be confident, and come with a purpose, but as far as the media goes, keep it quiet and hope the other teams take you too lightly.
They surprised Belgium a bit. But then they walked right up and poked Croatia in the eye. Stupid. And now they have been exposed by a riled-up power house.
OneSoccer is essentially no coverage. You know what the CPL needs to really grow exponentially? Either TSN/Sportsnet/CBC to play the games every week. Literally no one is paying for OneSoccer aside from a hardcore fans.
And yeah, of course they’re off the bandwagon…there is no bandwagon. Canada gets one more game and they’re headed home. How could a broadcaster not look at other countries and try to make sure people are interested in watching the final three weeks of the tournament?
Catch 22 isn't it? Networks don't want to show the games because of lack of interest. People don't have interest because they have to purchase a subscription service to see the games.
I get why TSN is doing this, but the point I'm trying to get at is that when the next national teams are on and the major broadcasters don't show the games and people complain that it's on a streaming service, this is why.
I just hope that when the men's team plays their next games in March that there are more people paying attention than there were in the fall of 2018. Not expecting it to have even remotely the type of interest of the last two games, but hopefully it moved the needle even a little.
Obviously if Herdman could do it again he wouldn't have said it. I don't think he meant anything by it, he got carried away. And I really doubt it mattered to the Croatians. The Croats were playing their balls off because they're being written off as washed up, and this is really their last go at it with this generation.
Herdmans great for out nations soccer program

Yay for Canada scoring. Too bad the first round increased our expectations. Came away thinking Canada could compete with #2 Belgium while Croatia had fallen back after drawing Morocco. Turns out it was Belgium that had taken a step back while Croatia and Morocco are both great teams.

Oh please, who cares? It’s petty but he’s not the first, won’t be the last.
Plus, it’s not nearly as bad as what he did after the Belgium loss. I heard he drove around town tossing Molotov cocktails into 3 different Belgian waffle houses and burnt them to the ground.
I am really proud that Canada was even in this tournament and they absolutely deserved to be. I expected them to advance (I thought the 1-2 teams would be Croatia and Canada). I really hope that Canada builds on this going forward, but it was pretty dumb to give the opponents any bulletin board material.
Four full disclosure, Croatia is my team and I am glad the won especially after the disrespect the coach showed.

Thank god this is the last 3 am kickoff. I'm looking forward so much to sleeping in a bit tomorrow. Didn't help that many of the early morning games were fairly dull affairs.
Exciting game so far. Serbia have scored twice in two minutes to bring it to 2-1 at half time.
I'm surprised that apparently no rule exists to penalise the entire subs bench running onto the pitch to celebrate a goal. Both benches have run to the far end of the pitch to celebrate here, and yet removing your shirt is a bookable offence.
