That's always how it is - if you leave of your own accord you're probably getting booed, if you leave but it wasn't your choice you get cheered. Nothing new there.

Did people boo Phaneuf? Asking seriously because I never really noticed one way or another for him.

He got booed quite a bit. By the years less and less, you could still hear boos when he was playing for the Kings in 2019, but in his first game back to the Dome I'd say about 50% of the crowd booed him.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dEusfr7iGyM
That's the full game of his first game back, anytime he touches the puck its loud. This is at the dome, the flames wore their whites though. Go to the first minute and six second mark of the video

They did, which I thought was pretty stupid. Phaneuf looked like he was blindsided by the trade too, as he looked pretty choked when they interviewed him while he was leaving for Toronto. So I'm not sure why fans booed him when he came back.

I'm pretty sure it was because of the rumours surrounding the locker room conflict and how it was entirely painting Phaneuf as the bad guy that needed to be traded for a pretty bad return.

There's nothing to dislike about Monahan if you're a Habs fan. They got him for nothing with a first round pick, his contract is up after the year and he comes with little to no expectations. The only way the Montreal faithful turn on him is if he accidentally runs over Suzuki or Caufield on his way to the rink.

Dion dug his own grave in Calgary. He made some pretty terrible decisions that forced Darryl's hand. If he was actually surprised about the trade that would be shocking.

Yeah, that trade works for Montreal if he rides the bench as the 13th forward the whole season. If he gets 30 points its a win, and if they get the garbage man it's a huge, huge win for them.
None of that makes it a bad trade for the Flames necessarily.

14 points (5G, 9A) in 21 games for Monahan.
I really hate James Neal. Signing him began the series of events that forced us to pay a 1st to trade Monahan because no one would take Lucic.
This trade certainly worked out for the Habs.

Long term, I think the risk of not getting Kadri outweighs the risk of Monahan returning to form. The 1st is what it took to take that risk. If it's a 1st overall or a 20th pick doesn't figure in the equation.
When the decision was made with the intent of signing Kadri, you are essentially betting on yourself that it won't be the first overall pick.

Pick is protected it won't be that high
No matter what Monahan is a UFA...Kadri was still the right choice. I also highly doubt he would have those points here...Montreal plays firewagon hockey and gives up a ton of chances.

he still doesn't have the finish he once did
and would not be able to displace lindholm or Kadri
happy for his bounce back though

That’s an odd way to say it. It’s only first overall protected and that is only in the case they don’t get Floridas pick. In that case Montreal just gets the better pick. If it’s calgarys pick then only first overall bumps it to totally unprotected the next year. If the Flames say draft 2-3, something they’ve never done well Montreal gets it.

There is far more to it than this...it is very unlikely to be a top 10 pick. Montreal gets the better pick if neither are top 10 in 2025.
They can also take Calgary's 2024 pick if it's 20-32.

Why would they take a 20-32 pick when they could get better next year? Even in the optimistic view of how this reload works the first 3 years are the best before they have all these expensive players for early/mid 30s players. Calgary could very much suck in 25 and lose a top five pick to Montreal. Not that I was against the trade but this reload isn’t exactly off to a good start. If the reload goes bad we’ll then they don’t win anything and they could lose a very high pick.
