Netherlands would be extremely comfortable with even a draw in their game coming up.
With a draw today, in order to not advance, they would require:
Ecuador LOSS to Senegal
AND
Netherlands LOSS to Qatar
AND
Lose goal differential to Ecuador (ie lose to Qatar by more goals than Ecuador loses to Senegal)
OR
Lose fair play tiebreakers (or whatever tiebreakers)

Its like watching the Maple Leafs playing against the Oilers.
The Age Old storied team that hasnt won anything since the 60s against the team that thinks they are way better than they actually are.

Ugh...Ecuador.
I dont like that it was called back, but yeah...you cant have a player offside in the goalkeeper's sight.
He didnt touch it, but is that enough to 'interfere with play?' Yeah, it probably is.

Can we just get rid of the offside rule? Do we really need it?

Man I’ve always hated that part of the offside rule.
1) Unless you actually play the ball you shouldn’t be considered offside (unless you’re truly preventing the goalie from being able to make the save).
2) There should be no such thing as offside for balls played from within the box. Should almost be like the blueline in hockey, and once the ball is in that area there is no such thing as offside.

Yup, absolutely the right call there. He’s affecting the play.

Well there's no way that keeper was changing his flight to save that, regardless of whether he could see it. He was diving the wrong way.

1. You can't screen the goalie from an offside position.
2. You turn it into hockey, running behind screening the goalie.

Umm.....big NO on that one lol.
I hate that offside call. I get the reasoning, but the goalie was never getting to that whether that guy was there or not. But then you get into the hypotheticals, so it's tough.
Strikers are often lazy in getting back into onside positions though, so this would be an example of that. You need to hustle to get back onside. Cost them a goal.

I'm not so certain. Basketball has no offsides and you don't just leave a guy under the opponent's basket.

Can confirm. In the 7v7 league in Calgary a couple years ago, they decided there would be no offsides. What this did is exactly what you said...the striker would cherry pick, and it took all creativity out of the game. Any time your team would win the ball in your end, you'd just hammer it up the field to your striker. Long balls all day long. Yawn.
