Take a step back and soak in the last 36 years for context. This is a team that was losing to the likes of Martinique on the regular. A team who basically all who followed first worried about getting past Suriname, then hoped somehow they'd snag the 4th spot in the Hex Ocho, and roll the dice in the Intercontinental Playoff.
While having a showing like today and having the lion's share of the chances and a missed penalty stings to walk away with nothing, hanging with the world's #2 ranked team in the freaking World Cup is so so far from disappointing.

Seeing Costa Rica's fate today (0-7 vs Spain) is honestly more what I expected today from Canada, but somehow knowing how much we earned and deserved to win/draw is both motivating and deflating at the same time. I can't tell if I'd be happier with a drubbing vs. coming that close and not getting a point. Certainly motivational for the next 2 games but damn, can't believe we played so well and came up short - that team certainly deserved it

Agreed. I remember growing up looking at the Canadian Soccer Association as a hopeless and useless organization that couldn't be expected to develop talent or to retain talent that developed in spite of them. The fact that the Canadian team showed up like they did today and competed the way they did is a huge leap for Canadian soccer. They were great. Sure, their finishing wasn't too hot, but they actually looked like a team that a young Canadian player could dream of playing for with pride. That didn't exist when I was growing up.

Also their waffles suck almost as much as their armed forces.
Their French Fries are exceptional, but they will complain vehemently about the term 'French.'
The Belgians did not invent Waffles, but they claim to have invented Fries. Allegedly.

This is every penalty taken in a world cup, from before the 2018 tournament
That area with all the clear circles, low and a bit to the left, where there are way more saves than goals, that's where davies hit it

Looking back at the game, I feel like Canada was really let down by some of the players who were most important in the qualifiers.
Davies had a couple moments but I think the occasion and injury got to him. Just some poor decisions, but I feel with the benefit of that game, and more time for fitness, he will be better the rest of the way.
Borjan just was not good enough. Thought he should have done better on the goal and the idiotic decision to just boot it up with a minute or two left when it would have been a 1 on 3 can't happen by a veteran. If you traded keepers, Canada wins.
I think Buchanan will be a big factor going forward and I think Larin scores if he was playing 1st half. Johnston started shakey but got better. David has to be a factor. Absolutely anonymous, if he wants a big move he better show something.
I think the biggest thing will be set pieces going forward. They don't necessarily have to result in goals, but they can't be atrocious and momentum killing. I've seen better in cusa division 4.
I feel weirdly optimistic that they will get something out of the Croatia game and it will all come down to Morocco.
Also how amazing was it to see Eustáquio nutmeg De Bruyne.

Shout out to Calgary referee Drew Fischer, who's on VAR today for Ghana/Portugal. He's reffed me many times over the years. Really great dude, and a great ref.

Ref should have let that go and let Var decide because iMo that was not a foul at all.

Refs call way too many fouls on offensive players, afraid that it will lead to a goal. It's a reflex. If roles were reversed he would not have called a penalty.

After sleeping on it, I think I am pretty disappointed in Herdman for not have set kick takers. Hindsight is 20/20 of course, and if Davies buries that PK no one is talking about this. But the fact is he didn't bury it, and there were options available. I loved TSN's analysis where they showed how he stood over the ball for 65 seconds. He should have reset, but that is lack of experience right there.
He probably telegraphed his shot 100 times over standing there like that, and it was poorly taken.
Overall I'm super happy with Herdman, that was certainly headscratcher for me.

It is just crushing to think that Canada was the best team in Group F yesterday, and walk away in 4th place. I get who they played, it's just so frustrating.
I think every member of that team believes they can advance though. I would think that a draw with Croatia, and a win against Morocco is a guaranteed advance (I am assuming Belgium does us a solid and doesn't lose to Croatia)

I have no problem with Davis taking the leadership role. I am not blaming the coach for a lack of execution by his best player.

Herdman says in interviews that he puts 100% trust in the players to make decisions such as who will take the penalty. Sometimes it's who wants to take an who's not feeling it.

How the F is that a penalty against Ronaldo, when the takedown of Laryea in the box yesterday was worse? C'mon FIFA, get your consistency in order.... geezus.
