Make Chris Tanev the Captain

The first time the Flames let the players choose their captain was 1989-90. They chose Brad McCrimmon, who promptly started a movement to get his coach fired. Cliff Fletcher had to step in at the end of the season and not only fire the coach, but trade away all the ringleaders for peanuts to restore some order to the team.

As much as I love Sutter, I believe it's a royal slap in the face to come out and say no one on the team deserves the C or could even handle it if they got it.

It's a good thing he has never said that. But there are several instances in which he has pointed directly at Tanev and Backlund and identified them as de facto captains of the team.

So, even if he did say something like that, I am almost certain it is couched in that context of the "25-29 year old" age group. He won Cups with Toffolli and Lewis; has consistently singled out Backlund and Tanev as the team's leaders. Clearly there are players Sutter trusts to lead the team, despite whatever he might have said in a press conference.

It's funny he mentions Iginla, since he didn't even name Iggy as captain. In fact, during his almost 30 years of NHL coaching, he's only named a captain twice, and both times he opted for co-captains: Nolan and Damphouse in San Jose and then Conroy and Boughner in Calgary.
