Went to go read their Trip Advisor reviews just for the laughs and surprisingly there's 8 hotels with a worse rating in the city still running.

Wow. I remember when the hotel on 17th burnt down that was down by TD bank. It was a dump also.

Ah yes the Forest Lawn hotel on the corner of 36th and 17th, big biker hangout. Only went there a few times, I was more of a Porky's (T&C) and Franky and Johnnies (Beacon) man myself. The owner was investigated for torching it himself...don't remember what the outcome was though.

That hotel was where Morley James died, the last firefighter to die in the line of duty here. It was July of 92. I was in training for CFD at the time, remember driving by it on the way to the fire academy. The owner did indeed torch it himself and went to jail for it, pos. RIP brother.

I met a guy at Loco Lou's when I was going to Sait. He had a wooden hand and a big lift on his one shoe. He told me that he started the fire in that hotel when he made a bomb out of a cigarette pack and the static electricity walking down the hallway set it off. He said that's all he could say about it. Who knows what he was on about.

Is that bowling alley still open up by TD bank also?

Great interview with CC, especially his reaction to the Phaneuf trade.

It sounds like the players had the same reaction as most of the fans at the time.
I couldn't tell if Warrener was serious when they were talking about how Sutter could rip a player and that Sutter made him cry once.

It kind of makes me sad - you can tell how much Conroy just loved Gaudreau.

It was also interesting to hear him talk about the O'Reilly offer sheet and how it was the only time he was harassed by a fan around town lol.

Warrener with an interesting debate with Seravalli today, which was centered around a point he's been making since the show debuted. He doesn't think the Flames needed to sign Huberdeau and Weegar before the season began, thinks too many GMs sign guys out of desperation and fear, admires GMs like Yzerman and Sakic who have been more ruthless and willing to hold their ground. Thinks we overpaid for both. Likens it to Chicago signing Seabrook. Interesting contrarian viewpoint.

I've heard him make the point before...as well as when he wanted to trade Gio at his peak and Gaudreau if he didn't sign going into his last year. All of these points have been mentioned over the year by posters on this site. They all have merit in my opinion.
Personally I'm always torn by being a super fan that wants to win and what is proper asset management. I find myself justifying the moves the team makes far too often. With Huberdeau, the way I justify it, as I would have with Gaudreau, is that the league will value him at his AAV (with inflation) over the life of the deal, so even if he doesn't work out here, he is a movable asset. We may have to pay extra to move him, but he's likely not an asset that goes to zero.
My example: Someone buys a Prada bag for $6k. An obscene amount of money at the time for a bag. Three years later with light use that bag is worth $5500, maybe more. So the real cost has been storage and the $500 difference.
On the other hand, you go get a "special edition" bag from diesel and pay $3k. Three years pass...and so does the fad that was pushing the price, and you've got a bag worth a few hundred bucks to a collector and a $2700 loss...aka Darnell Nurse.

I feel like there is something here about a 'player' vs 'executive' perspectives. The former being more prone to the noise surrounding a team's moves, and players having to develop a skill set of drowning that out and just playing.

I respect the tough approach to star players and not being afraid to play hardball and walk away, but with that opinion you certainly need to factor in the market you're talking about.
If places like Calgary play hardball with too many star players, you'll just never have star players. We need to understand that this isn't Florida or California or a good chunk of the US to be honest. We're already at a huge disadvantage in attracting and retaining talent.

I also highly disagree that we overpaid for Weegar, that's an insane assertion to me, I was shocked in a good way when that contract was announced. Especially with what quality defensemen are going for these days.

Yzerman and Sakic were also superstar players in the NHL. I think that's because they take a player's mentality with them going into a GM role; whereas some GMs didn't have the same player path and think with a management/executive decision mindset.
