There's no point in looking at it this way since Tkachuk wasn't going to sign and would leave for nothing.
If this was a traditional hockey trade of players under contract, then you can do this, but it's irrelevant with the scenario that the Flames had.
Even if the Flames lose the trade long term, they still made an amazing trade given the circumstances.

It's a feature on Tkachuk. Talking to a former player, especially a star, before said player plays his old team again for the first time isn't a new idea or remotely controversial.

Right. SOP, especially following the Huberdeau article before it.
Except for the tone.
One with a decidedly negative slant, trying to stir #### up, on a player who has done everything right since coming here. The other a standard, fluff piece, casting nothing but a positive light on a player who - just a few months ago - announced he didn't want to play here.

Lots of team-approved content on nhl.com/flames! The lead story right now has a fun headline of “I’m happy with my game.” 🤗

And held the team hostage to boot. And basically made his intentions known when signing his last deal that he was unlikely to stay and/or forcing the Flames to an ultimatum this past offseason.
The quick turnaround by Treliving and the positive PR from the MT camp (especially given the JG terribly handled PR) made and has made people forget that Tkchauk never really wanted to be in Calgary long term earlier than this past offseason, and nothing was going to keep him loyal here this offseason.

Matthew Tkachuk does not have loyalty to anyone but Matthew Tkachuk.

In looking at it what way? I'm not upset. I'm not saying it was a bad trade. I'm just saying it's not that fun right now. It could all be different in a couple of games.

Sure, but why should he?
This antiquated notion (not saying you specifically) that players should be loyal to the team that drafted them is lame. Hate the player if you want; that's sports, but complaining about loyalty in the current era is just naive.

Plus loyalty to the player doesn't exist either. If it did, buyouts wouldn't happen and Vegas wouldn't do ... Vegas things.

I'll be honest, at this point, I would rather have Tkachuk long term over Huberdeau and Weegar when you consider quality, age, and term.
If the rumour about Tkachuk wanting to move on because he was never going to be captain are true, that would be a downer. I would have just let him be captain in that case and signed him.
I have no idea if that rumour is true, so given that he was heading out the door anyway, I like the trade. But I will always wonder if it was really necessary.

Is it antiquated? I mean, was there ever a time when it was a justified idea? I think not.
It's been this way as long as there has been professional hockey. In the early days, teams used to sign players to one-year contracts with no reserve clause or draft. Sometimes a team would have to recruit a whole new roster because all their players left over the summer.
Fans are loyal to ‘their’ teams, and it pleases them to imagine that the players are, too. But that loyalty is far more about PR than reality.

Flames hardest strength of schedule thus far
Panthers 27th hardest
so opposite the rest of the way

I never got the impression that he had earned the C in the eyes of his peers. I doubt giving him the role would have been a problem if he had. It's not like there was someone else wearing that letter, so the opportunity was there for him.

I mean in looking at how many points each side has put up in comparison to each other.
I get what you're saying though. The rest of my post was just my perspective on it, not suggesting you're upset or saying it's a bad trade.
Hopefully these wins continue and we're having all the fun Saturday night.

And just make the letter a joke? Being captain is an honour that is earned, how can it be taken seriously if you're just going to give it to a guy to appease his feelings?
That's a ridiculous suggestion, sorry.
