they live in an alternate reality there and are highly defensive about anything that doesn't jive with their delusional bubble . which is most often their own posters after they get a glimpse of daylight from the real world . they turn on their own a lot every time one tries to smarten up and suggest a non pro-edmonton /oiler/mcdavid take . it's funny

I will always very fondly remember the ~'10-'17 oilers as a flames fan living in the frozen north. A veritable hive of scum and stupidity. Still ongoing of course, but back then it was so consuming. Being a young man with a heavy social life at the time, I was interacting with some of these chuckles at parties and bars (in season!) and a weekend didn't go by where at least one horrible story about them didn't come out.

But at the time it was largely young idiots doing stupid things mostly reflecting poorly upon themselves. Like Hall and Ebs tag teaming gutter rats, or Yakupov getting lit at a restaurant bar. Personal fave was Bryzgalov coming to my bar and eating two steaks post a particularly bad game lol- drank 4 pints and wouldn't look a soul in the eye. And their hijinks at the time was only rewarded by abysmal failure.

Now they're so much worse as people. Both impressive and ridiculous. And their occasional success makes them all the more intolerable.

The Oilers fan base is full of hockey knowledge, for instance just today I learned,

- Cody Ceci is better than Chris Tanev and would be one of the best two defenseman on the Calgary Flames.

- The Habs are going to trade Josh Anderson to Edmonton for Jesse Puljujarvi straight across and a third team is going to jump in and retain 50% of Andersons contract for a mid-level draft pick.

- Also read an article saying how McDavid is statistically the best defensive 5v5 forward the Oilers have and is likely the secret weapon for the Oilers penalty killing, que up McJesus for 30 mins per night.

- Chychrun could probably be had for Puljujarvi, Broberg and a 2nd round pick and of course they retain salary on that as well.

They really are unbelievable. Not a damn ounce of hockey knowledge north of Red Deer, its actually embarrassing.

My brother in law, normally a man of reasonable intelligence (well, reasonable enough) adamantly told me this weekend that the oilers are going to acquire Kane and Toews, with Chicago retaining 50% and Arizona retaining an additional 50%. He believes this would cost Broberg and a 1st "or two".

It took me a couple of minutes to stop laughing.

There does seem to be a distinct lack of understanding up North when it comes to asset trades. It should not be a foreign concept that in order for two sides to agree on an exchange of assets both sides would have to benefit from that exchange. Teams are not player stores waiting for other teams to come in and pick up what they are short on, yet for Edmonton this concept of heading to the player store to pick up some deals is the prevailing one.

there are delusional trade proposals with every fan base but only in edmonton do they mean them with total seriousness and build up an expectation that these pro oiler trades will come to pass (and tell others to expect it) . they have this distorted way of thinking that other teams exist to serve the Oilers needs over their own . really ties in with the team of destiny delusion that grips many of them

Even if Chicago were willing to give up Kane and Toews for Broberg and a 1st, and even if they were willing to retain 50%, and even if ARI were willing to retain another 50% (for whatever cost), they still have the small problem of bringing on $5M of salary (one quarter of each of them) with ZERO cap space.

So they would also have to trade Puljujarji AND Yamamoto, and acquire another defenseman to replace Broberg.

The fan base and media up there are far past delusional. The assessment they have of their players, specifically Puljujarvi, Broberg, and Holloway is just plain comical.

For Puljujarvi, the narrative has now changed that he is now an elite defensive forward (he is -6 and a green jacket contender as it stands) and he serves as a defensive stalwart for the forward group. They can't accept he has zero value and is a cap dump, I really see his value on the same level as Trevor Lewis or Brett Ritchie in the eyes of other teams in the league.

They can't accept that Broberg is not an 'A' level prospect. They absolutely lose their mind when it is mentioned that all teams have a Broberg quality ('B' level prospect) player in their system on defense. However, they continue to try to include him as the cornerstone of a trade for a top player which is hilarious.

As a Flames fan I have no problem admitting we don't really have any blue-chip prospects in our system. For the Flames the closest is likely Dustin Wolf but it is really hard with goalies. I like Dylan Holloway, have watched him lots playing growing up, but he is not a blue-chip prospect. He had a couple decent seasons in the AHL, and I put him a sliver ahead of Zary (but not significantly). But the fans think they have the next great power forward in their grasp. I see Holloway as a 2nd/3rd line player with some offensive upside. But when you mention that teams may want Holloway with a 2023 1st for a top end player you swear you were trading away Conor Bedard. It's absolutely insane.

Oilers fans/media have zero hockey sense, hockey knowledge, or knowledge of assets. They are the complete Triple Zero.

Hot off the press, Oilers linked to Tarasenko but would give Yamamoto and 1st because the Blues asking for Puljujarvi is just too much……… holy moly.

None of this is new. Sather and then Lowe made sure the local press (and therefore the fans) were in lockstep with the communication that the management of the team.

By controlling the message and disbursing some juicy rumours to the press and fans by the organization, it keeps loyalty and hope of the fanbase in a delusional way. And, how often have you heard the management of the Oilers deny a rumour? Rarely, because the rumours come from them via the press.

Don't Toews and Kane have NMC? Why would they waive it to go to Edmonton? Do they waive it just so they can play with McDavid? They are 3 times SC champs, who the hell is McDavid. May be McDavid would waive his so he can be traded to Chicago and play with the 3 times SC duo?
