Mackey has been pure dog#### and some want to trade another defenseman? Can't we see what this strategy has done to the Leafs??
I don't understand that at all. I was one of the biggest trade Hanifin posters pre season, but I can't see how one could look at the current lineup and even remotely entertain that. Even when Kylington comes back, I wouldn't be confident enough in the depth to let Hanifin go.

That is why I included a defenseman coming back, in the proposal I made.
Flames trade a goalie and and downgrade a defenseman (both positions of strength) to get an offensive winger.
Leafs trade an offensive winger (a position of strength) to acquire a goalie and upgrade on defense.
Neither team makes the trade, just conversation. And it assumes that Kylington is back at some point.

Hanifin’s not on my list to trade. He’s way too important here.

Leafs don’t just need to upgrade, they need a pro Dman stat. Muzzin is gone, and Brodie is out for a while.

Same.
25 year old top pairing defenseman are not easy to find. Noah isnt flashy but he is very good on both ends of the ice.
One of the last people I would trade on the team and for the most part I consider him our best overall defender.

A shame that Sutter and Valimaki didnt connect better, he is looking good in Phoenix, yes i get it - a worse team and more minutes.. but with the injuries we had... woul dhe have not been better than Mackey, Desimone and/or Gilbert...
Love sutter but the one knock is how doesnt seem to see potential in young D-men, Gio off to Russia ( got lucky, he came back) , Kylington waived ( got lucky) and now Valimaki ( maybe not so lucky since he was claimed)

I was all for trading Hanifin this summer. I was proposing trades for Necas or Barzal that a lot seem to dislike. Looking now even with the mess on D these trades would have been a steal as both Necas and Barzal are a PPG or better.
Both those trades may never have been an option and def are not an option now. It's looking like it would be tough to trade Hanifin right now with how disappointing Mackey has been and uncertainty of Kylington.
Treliving had a great summer IMO but the Valimaki situation is looking like a big mistake. He's the only player in Arizona that is over 50% for expected goals for and everyone else is 41% or worse. He's looking like he might be turning into the player we thought we had. If that worked out for us, then maybe trading Hanifin would be a good option (I still feel he's very overrated) but right now it seems like a bad option to move him until at least we know when Kylington is back.

I wonder if we could actually dump Lucic's contract along with Noah to the Leafs. Kylington has to be delt with in one form or another...I mean...we don't even know if he is skating? Don't know the status on Stone? Noah plus Lucic and a pick for Nylander?

At this point, the team only has 5 healthy established NHL d-men and you want to trade one of them and not even get a d-man in return?

Before we trade for anyone, we should probably give the RHS RW who is top in points in the AHL a chance for free.

I agree, that's why I mentioned Stone and Kylington...I can't see the Leafs sending back ANY Dman? Maybe? Dumping the Lucuc contract (even some retained) would be nice...

I think they should give Philips a look but the guy has Austin Czarnik vibes to me and I think he is likely a good in AHL but not the NHL

For anyone interesting in improving the roster, who are you wiling to trade? Where are the areas of strength from which to draw?
Or are we just back to the usual approach of trading prospects and picks?

Losing Valimaki, Kylington being MIA, and Mackey being a complete dud have ruined the Flames hopes of swinging a big deal for a top 6 forward by trading a top 4 Dman. The flames do not have picks/prospects to deal in my opinion unless they want the Huberdeau/Kadri years to be incredibly long and painful.
I am having a hard time seeing a deal that makes sense to the team unless they take a guy like Drouin or Dandanov off the Habs at 50% retained for basically nothing

Drouin at 50% is interesting. I would tangle with that. Wonder what that would cost.

Not much, I imagine. I like Drouin as well. Represented by Walsh, was doing events in the summer with Huberdeau, has oodles of skill but serious issues with consistency
Huberdeau - Backlund - Drouin
Mangiapane - Kadri - Coleman
Ruzicka - Lindholm - Toffoli
<disaster of a 4th line…maybe Dube and Looch could click?>
If Sutter could get Drouin on the right page, he could have massive upside…but he wouldn’t be the first coach tasked with righting Drouin’s inconsistencies.

I'm also still highly interested in Debrincat. I know I got poo poo'd the last time I brought him up, but he's still producing at a high clip while Ottawa looks extremely Meh. No real news about extension... I could see him being dangled at the deadline for sure.

His cost would be huge, and he wants a very high extension. And we'd need to dig hard for the cap space to fit him in.
