Why does the city gravel roads when the snow has been removed and it's clear pavement? I will never understand this. Seems so wasteful and just adds to the cleanup.

I've always assumed someone at the roads department was getting kickbacks from the chip repair and windshield replacement places.

I think they just do their route regardless of conditions.

Yep. They are given a route...and they gravel it. Theirs is not to question why, theirs is to do as they're told.

Nah. Just clean road most of it was white dry. It's just so dumb as if you are behind a vehicle you are essentially getting shot peened.

I imagine it's something like this where if they return at the end of their shift with a truck full of gravel then they are reprimanded for not doing their job regardless if it was needed or not.

I always thought it wasn't just gravel, but a mix of gravel, sand and de-icer (pickle juice or something?)...

Could it be that the de-icer did it's job, cleared the snow & ice and now dry pavement and gravel remain?

Beet juice, rather than pickle juice, is one of the methods they use for ice sometimes.

'Pickle mix' is one of the colloquial names for a sand/salt/gravel mix

Nope. The roads have been clear for at least two days and overnight they keep dropping the gravel on them. It's a mix but the reality is that they shouldn't be dropping anything on the roads when they are clear of ice and snow as the salt is hard enough on the pavement and the gravel just makes a mess and is hard on vehicles.

A late Halloween gear grinder as I was digging through my kid's candy today to find an afternoon sugar high but what is with all the people who bag individual candies? We are in a global climate crisis and our government is imposing single use plastic bags so why are all these people making extra waste by putting candies in Ziploc bags or other plastic bags? Why spend the extra time before Halloween putting together all these little baggies for the kids? Just grab a fistful of candies out of the box when the kid's are at the door.

I remember a few people did this when I was a kid, but since covid there are a lot more self-serve houses. The baggies are a bit of a defense to pillaging. I did self-serve but definitely didn't bother with baggies though (just replenished a table out front every 20 mins or so)

Just tell your kids Halloween is an antiquated idea and the idea of them going door to door begging your neighbours for hundreds of pieces of individually wrapped candy is a huge waste of time, money and resources.
problem solved.

I consider this training for the future as we aren't part of the 1% and life will probably only get worse for my kids instead of better.

you should be encoring them to grab as many of those bags as their little hands can carry.

Years ago on Holloween, my wife was handing out candies, and along came a father with his 4 year old son. After my wife gave the little boy the candy, the father said to his son, "What do you say?" And his son said "MORE".

I don’t know what weirdos need to hear this, but apparently it’s most people over 40 who I know. Why are people obsessed with poking/pinching/tickling my 1 year old? She doesn’t like it, and makes it clear. Not only that, I’ve just straight up never considered it an idea all the times in my life when I’ve met kids. Because that sounds horrifying as a kid. Also nobody my age does it. All grandparent aged. Including people she’s never met… how can you have so little self awareness? You weren’t intimidated/hate it when older people would touch you or guilt you into a hug or something when you were a child? It’s literally a trope in movies that older people pinch/kiss grandkids (unrelated “aunts” included) without consent. The entitlement is incredible. I’m going to start getting very direct about this in the moment.

My kids are old enough that this isn't an issue for me any more. But man that is infuriating. I truly do not get why people think that's ok. I was pretty direct as well, and think that is good as a chance for people to learn that their behaviour is inappropriate touching of children.
