Default The losing streak - optimist vs. pessimist: which side are you on

I'm looking at this two ways today and this is the first angle I'm putting out. I'm optimistic about this team turning things around sooner than later. Pessimistic view to come tonight and I'll add it here as well.

From a conversation standpoint, though, curious to see where the majority is at. If someone wants to add a poll ...

Three reasons not to panic over the Flames seven-game losing streak.

I think the 20 game mark is crucial. Unfortunately the team will probably need a 5 game win streak to get back in it. I am not optimistic about that.

Neutral, I don’t care if they win or not right now, it doesn’t matter if we play good at the start of regular season. The only thing that matters are the games leading up to the post season and getting into the playoffs. I could not care if we are first or last in the west, I will start worrying when we will be at risk of not getting into playoffs

I guess I'm optimistic for the following reasons:

- they had a good start to the season which means they're not too far out of it yet
- they are playing well and not getting the bounces
- they have a lot of new pieces in key positions that are still getting acclimated
- they have some key injuries at the moment
- The Flames longest losing streak was 11 games in 1986. They went to the Cup finals. (I know, different era, etc.)
- This is a veteran team that will likely not panic

i'm optimistic because they have too many good players to not make the playoffs.

Cautiously optimistic.

Trust that Sutter didn't simply forget how to coach. And you have to think Huberdeau is just having a tough time adjusting and will figure it out.

Pessimistic about Mangiapane as I think he caught lightning in a bottle in a contract year with respect to goals. He doesn't bring much to the table if he isn't scoring.

Team needs a first line right winger badly. Toffoli is playing well but is really a good 2nd liner.

Markstrom is worrisome.

From 2004 to 2015 I was optimistic. But since then, mostly Pessimistic.

I think I just learned that it’s blessed not to get my hopes up as much.

I don't think some people realize how important it is to not go under .500 at any point. American thanksgiving is the important date for playoff chances. Just under 2 weeks away now, and you have to have things figured out by then. If you're not in a playoff spot at that point you're screwed except in very rare anomaly lightning in a bottle circumstances.

Dependent on injuries for me. Another week without Tanev and Huberdeau might be it

Buddy that risk is now. They have to win games at over a .600 pace now.

Team will miss the playoffs
Leading goal scorer will have 28 goals
Huberdeau, Lindholm, and Mangiapane will have less than 60 points each
Markstrom will have a save percentage under .900
Treliving will lose his job by late April

The team will be fine, we knew they would probably have chemistry issues to start. Combine that with injuries and a brutal schedule to start and they will turn it around easily.

Optimistic because
They can and will play better (many are playing below their capabilities)
Also because I’m pessimistic about the division as a whole

we will write them off this month and then when they move into the easy part of the schedule and get healthy and kylington pops up out of nowhere they'll come storming back to a playoff spot and drag us all back into the fold to experience another round of heartbreak

I think the skaters are fine when healthy, they're still putting shots on net, but I have ongoing concerns with Markstrom.
At this point he has been poor for most of his past 18 games.

If the Flames miss the playoffs, it'll be because the goaltenders finish under 90%

Could they make playoffs? Sure.
However, they could also miss it given the results lately.
That is not the bar I expected or wanted to be set though.
We just signed 3 guys to huge contracts well into their 30's.
We have a small window of around the next 3 seasons.
If we're still a wildcard team this is massively disappointing.
