Why a preference for trades? I have friends who've been laid for years at a time with trades. There becomes a point where there's too many electricians, or too many elevator mechanics.

People should be able to take what they want in school without it destroying their future due to cost, it's all useful in my opinion.

I'm not up in arms about the comment, but it is a little patronizing and out of touch. It reminds me of one of the local civic politicians in the LML here when someone asked about the Metro Vancouver gas tax and that maybe reducing the tax on fuel to help people with the cost of living, he asked if the person ever thought of buying an electric car because you can save in the long run. Really, thanks man, never thought of that! Oh wait, if someone doesn't have money to pay for gas, they likely don't have the dough for a new car, or a house to plug it in at either.

The latter is obviously more tone deaf, but they are both starting to get close to "let them eat cake" territory.

And IF she had been saying "The way for people to deal with inflation is to cut Disney+" maybe I could see the point. But that isn't what she said, she didn't even say people need to cut anything. She only noted that households (mothers and wives) are looking at their costs and then gave a personal anecdote about how she is in the same boat of looking at all costs. In her circumstance Disney+ was not required so they cut it. In no way did she say that Canadians should be doing the same. This is only how social media is framing it for people to try and use it as ammunition.

This is a far cry from saying the way to deal with high gas prices is to buy an electric car, or if heating bills are too high you should put on a sweater.

It was still a pretty dumb thing to talk about. Obviously when people are having trouble making ends meet, they have to cut things in other areas. Only a really privileged person would have to mention it as if it was a new thing that people just thought of. Most people have been doing this at various stages their whole lives.

I totally disagree and think you are mischaracterizing it. She wasn't mentioning it as a new thing or as a way for people to cut things in their life - she was simply saying that like all mothers and wives across Canada she has to look at her budget and find things that might not have the same value anymore. In her case it was Disney+, in my case it was Sportsnet, in someone else's house it is one less Starbucks, in someone else's case it is no name ketchup instead of brand name.

There is nothing in what she said that is supposed to say "hey it's tough times so try doing this" - what she said is that "hey it's tough times for everyone and everyone is trying different things to make ends meet, for me it was this."

Personally I think it sounds disingenuous. What cost cutting initiatives have any of these people in government really done (for government or personally)? I don’t even believe she did it. Lol

It was a dumb thing to say that rings hollow and I bet you 90% of Canadians see through it. It’s not even like cutting Disney+ is some big sacrifice either, which is why it also why it sounds so disconnected from most people. Like it actually is just a dumb comment so I don’t see why it requires any defence.

How it was dumb? It was just a comment. You’re putting weight into it that it doesn’t carry by itself and getting mad at the intended weight of the thing.

I’m not mad at all lol. It’s just a dumb thing for a 2IC leader to say given contemporary cost pressures for most Canadian families. That’s all. It’s not like it’s a back breaking comment or anything, just not very smart / appreciative of how the majority of families have it or the types of pressures people are facing.

It’s not even that. It’s a conversational anecdote that literally any normal person would have no problem sharing and wouldn’t mean anything beyond what it is. Making it out to be not smart or appreciative of whatever is a very strange and petty thing.

Do you guys have normal conversations with people? I have a friend who makes more than me who told me about how he saved a bunch of money cutting all his streaming services and going back to torrenting everything. Should I tell him some guys on the internet say that isn’t very appreciative of what I’m going through? lol

She is just so insincere and the Liberal way is talking down to Canadians. Out of touch politicians mansplaining household budgets. Contrary to Liberal beliefs, Canadians are able to do math and decide were they need to cut their personal costs. The ignorance in her statement is that she simply ignores the fact that sadly for some households, it's not about deciding between Netflix, Crave and Disney+. The decisions are between keeping the thermostat at 22 or 17, a tank of gas or a cart of groceries, skip a utility payment this month or a credit card payment. These are the true realities many are worried about. I mean, at least she didn't go with the "cup of coffee close", but the out of touch mansplaining and horrible personal anecdotes, is part of what makes this government, most governments, intolerable.

For a lot of households, little changes like cutting a streaming service is a normal, smart thing to do.

So should we praise her for her smart, practical advice? Or condemn her for her ignorant, insincere comment?

I’d argue both are fairly stupid and both require a lot of bias to buy. I don’t find it particularly convincing when people who already dislike a politician have to make up the context of a statement in order to get mad about it. If you have to assume all these negative things about it, are you mad at Freeland? or are you just made and busy figuring out what about?

Some Canadians are deciding on things more dire than cutting a streaming service. But most Canadians, including those Canadians, have bigger things to fret about than whether a politician said she’s cutting Disney+. You don’t, which is fine, but maybe you’re a little out of touch yourself.
