Come on, this is nothing compared to what the above list of players did, especially considering it happened as a teenager. There is an obvious reason why this is getting the headlines and it has absolutely nothing to do with bullying. The NHL continues to be the league of the Double Standard.

This should be interesting as there seems to be a lot of overlap between the 'not guilty = total exoneration' and 'boys will be boys' crowds.

which is fine and adds a bit of balance, but let's not pretend that his coach is bias-free and doesn't stand to gain from promoting his role in reforming Miller's character.

Why are you not complaining that the journalist did not dig for more details about this supposed character-building plan?

Dealing with a situation where you got called out for making a silly assumption about someone (that turned out, obvious to anyone, to be wrong) by making more assumptions about someone’s intent and emotional state, even despite them telling you otherwise, seems like another truly bizarre decision.

Again, nobody is as upset, confrontational, or dismissive as they are in your head. There’s no ledge, no breaks required, none of whatever that nonsense is. You’re a good poster, I like you, but you didn’t like that I called you on a bizarre comment and I get that, so when I say I’m happy to make an adjustment so that we avoid this weird petty back and forth, I mean it. If you were to offer the same, I’d say just ask intent instead of assuming it, as there would be zero issue. But up to you.

I’m just perplexed to how decisions are made to who gets to play and who doesn’t based on their past issues or actions. To me, Millers actions are the least severe of any of the players on that list but yet it is being made like the Boston Bruins signed Jeffrey Dahmer.

What goes into the decision? Is it based on how good of a hockey player you are? If you are already in the NHL do you get a free pass?

Either you hold the behavior of children against them forever or you don't, if he buys a winning lotto ticket do we then refuse to pay him the prize, do we refuse to pay anyone the prize who did something questionable as a kid?

If we are going to accept that we forgive kids for their stupidity that forgiveness is based on the idea that as kids we don't have the rational capacity to make complex ethical choices, we forgive children because we do not judge them as competent in the way an adult is, if this is the basis of our forgiveness then logically (assuming he is saying and doing the things now that show he has matured and realizes the error of his ways) then the forgiveness should be total

All of the posts saying Miller has never shown remorse are based on her comments and no other source. It's not a question of bringing her up when her statements are the basis of the whole argument.

I imagine the NHLPA does. Mitchell isn't a member, thus isn't afforded the protections, the PA provides.

It's been reported by multiple outlets, and does not appear to be only hearsay from the victim's mother (though many reports reference the mother's reference to the magistrate's comments).

Quote:
Convicted in juvenile court in 2016, Miller’s first apology was a court-ordered one. William Hutchenson, the juvenile magistrate in the case, even said to Miller, “I don’t have a sense of real remorse. But I do feel that you feel sorry for yourself.”

Also from the Athletic article back in 2020, there were clubs that interviewed Miller and did not believe he was remorseful.

Quote:
Others arranged Zoom calls with Miller that left them feeling unconvinced of his remorse.

I've often seen news reported by ‘multiple outlets’ that were all copying other media reports, and it turned out that everything could be traced back to a single source. If that source should turn out to be unreliable, it doesn't matter how many people in the media repeated it.

I'm willing to forgive a lot of things done by others that I deem to be terrible but it always hinges on contrition. Miller has thus far only demonstrated that he is sorry that he is in the situation he is in. That's not remorse. That's regret that the Piper finally came to collect on his debt.

News Update

Bruins have cut ties with Miller

https://www.nhl.com/bruins/news/brui...er/c-337296694

Quote:
Statement from Bruins President Cam Neely:

"Today the Boston Bruins have decided to part ways with Mitchell Miller, effective immediately.

The decision to sign this young man was made after careful consideration of the facts as we were aware of them: that at 14-years-old he made a poor decision that led to a juvenile conviction. We understood this to be an isolated incident and that he had taken meaningful action to reform and was committed to ongoing personal development. Based on that understanding we offered him a contract.

Based on new information, we believe it is the best decision at this time to rescind the opportunity for Mitchell Miller to represent the Boston Bruins. We hope that he continues to work with professionals and programs to further his education and personal growth.

We owe it to our fans, players, staff, partners and community to make sure that our practices and protocols are in keeping with the ethos that we demand from ourselves and as an organization. As such, we will be reevaluating our internal processes for vetting individuals who wish to earn the privilege of playing in the National Hockey League for the Boston Bruins.

We are sorry that this decision has overshadowed the incredible work the members of our organization do to support diversity and inclusion efforts. We will continue to stand against bullying and racism in all of its forms.

To Isaiah and his family, my deepest apologies if this signing made you and other victims feel unseen and unheard. We apologize for the deep hurt and impact we have caused.

Finally, as a father, I think there is a lesson to be learned here for other young people. Be mindful of careless behaviors and going with the group mentality of hurting others. The repercussions can be felt for a lifetime."
