Game Preview

Calgary enjoyed a similar stretch as New Jersey when it won five of its first six games after losing star Johnny Gaudreau in free agency. But the Flames head into Saturday on a three-game losing streak, along with four losses in their past six, and are coming off their worst showing of the season.

Red-hot Devils aim to continue Flames' skid

Since reaching the Stanley Cup Final in 2012, playoff appearances and lengthy winning streaks are rare occurrences for the New Jersey Devils.

The Devils are attempting to change the narrative about whether they are a postseason team, and their latest triumph made them realize some of the things it takes to play beyond the regular season.

Coming off an impressive comeback over the Edmonton Oilers, the Devils seek their sixth straight win Saturday night when they visit the Calgary Flames.

Devils Wrap Up Road Trip in Calgary | GAME PREVIEW

Head-to-Head:

The Devils lost both of its games against the Flames last season. When New Jersey hosted on Oct. 26, 2021 the home team lost 5-3. When the Devils were last in Calgary they lost 6-3. The last time the Devils won in Calgary was Jan. 13, 2017 with a 2-1 final score.

I’m going to PVR it. If they decide to show up tonight then maybe I’ll watch it later.

It's Saturday, and the Flames are on HNIC. I PVR most games and stay off of SM before watching them later, and win or lose I can't imagine opting out of watching the Flames on HNIC, ever. I could understand if it was February and the team was awful. But, it's the first week of November.

Must at the very least look like a competent hockey team. Since the Carolina game they’ve just looked bad, except for the oilers game but the oilers are terrible and any team looks good against them.

60 good minutes, that’s where winning starts

My thoughts are:
- potential Stanley cup matchup
- flames need to bounce back after a couple of tough losses

Could be the biggest game of the year

The Flames were winning home games on this stand without playing particularly well, then they started losing with bad habits.

Now it's clear they're not playing all that well, but Sutter should have little difficulty getting their attention.

But on top of that there are some unsustainable things happening with key Calgary forwards.

If you rank the top 300 NHL forwards in ice time by GF/60 - xGF60 (actual results vs indications of what results should have been) ... the Flames have four of the worst converting forwards in the league.

13. Lindholm
21. Huberdeau
32. Mangiapane
42. Coleman

That's 4 of the top 42 in a 32 team league.

Generally elite players out play their expected numbers with skill.

They haven't looked good, but they're also not finishing at the level that the chances they are generating suggest.

Dube and Kadri are the only positive players actually ... both on the strength of Kadri filling the net early.

# is the rank

Row Labels Sum of GF-xGF Sum of #
Elias Lindholm -1.69 13
Jonathan Huberdeau -1.37 21
Andrew Mangiapane -1.17 32
Blake Coleman -0.93 42
Tyler Toffoli -0.5 87
Mikael Backlund -0.11 142
Dillon Dube 0.41 205
Nazem Kadri 0.68 225

This team needs some energy, big time. If that can't come from within the room why not call up a kid or two? If only to inject some youth and energy. Flames have been flat now 2 games in a row, thats crazy to me.

Amy news on Tanev? Saying upper body. I wonder if it's the surgically repaired shoulder?

We sure miss Tanev. I like seeing the projected lines back to where they were.

I've watched the last 3 games live and all were L's. Safe to say I'll skip the game tonight. We need that W.

GFG!!

Come back Tanev! I'd say he is the most important Flame at this point.
