icon57 What would rebuilding look like?

I'm happy with the make up of this team and glad we were able to salvage what happened in the off season. It's exciting to think we have a legitimate chance this season but it's pretty much boom or bust.

I did look at next year's cap situation and it made me think about what if we did decide to rebuild after losing Gaudreau and Tkachuk, what would the team look like going into the off season next year with big hitters in the draft (Bedard/Michkov)?

Possibly no Kadri so Monahan rides out his contract and we still have Floridas 1st
Not re-signing Huberdeau and flipping him before deadline for possibly a 1st and 2nd? Maybe even two 1st?
Not re-signing Weegar and flipping him before deadline for possibly a 2nd? Maybe even a 1st?
Hanifin may not want to re-sign an extension so what would trading him be worth with a pick?
Teams might be interested in Markstrom and what would he be worth?
Lindholm and Toffoli would also be one year from expiring so flipping them for a draft pick could be done.

With a crap ton of cap space after 23 we would be able to sign a good UFA as well. Also with a ton of picks for 23 draft, we could make a ton of noise if picking the right kids. Thoughts?

I don’t want to watch a rebuild. You have about a 3% chance of winning the cup each year.

I’d rather be as competitive as possible each year and see what happens.

Yeah that's fair. But making moves in season and off season is always exciting too. Just not so much the sucking part.

No, rebuilds are just a crap shoot. Edmonton sat around stockpiling draft picks, and honestly they are no closer to winning the cup then the Flames are and pissed away their rebuild assets.

I honestly think rebuilds are the ultimate rip off of fans. Teams intentionally reduce their team to crap, reduce their payroll and still charge full price.

Arizona has been rebuilding forever and they're hot garbage.

Pass, I'd rather have a smart proactive competitive GM.

So um, no thanks.

Um, yes?

You've said the name and summoned them, just waiting for them to thank the OP now.

I can't believe this is a thread after two losses in a row. It's a long season, there will be peaks and valleys.

What an odd time for a thread like this.

And impossible to speculate what the status would have been like.

For one thing, you don’t trade for Huberdeau and Weegar and then rebuild.

So, Tkachuk would have been moved for futures only.

Lock this thread up this is a ridiculous topic.

A rebuild would likely have management and coaching gone, selling pieces off for futures and 5-10 years of trying to get back to what they are now

Rebuilds always seem exciting because everyone overhypes prospects. It takes years and luck. RNH, Yakupov, Murray etc as the high pick would suck.

Rebuild means no Sutter extension, full stop, so roll the dice on a whole new squad and get back on the coach carousel, I'll pass.

Rebuilds are mostly crap shoot tbh. McDavid’s, Mackinnon’s, Matthews’ and Makar’s aren’t available every draft year and there’s been plenty of rebuilds that haven’t been entirely successful or lasted longer than they should’ve. It’s obvious with the coach the team has and the players that were still here even without Johnny and Chucky that the Flames weren’t gonna rebuild.

The rebuild in Calgary will happen eventually. Might as well just enjoy the team trying to compete until it’s inevitably forced upon us

Wow...the guy is just having a conversation. He didn't say we should rebuild, just wondering what it would have looked like. Sometimes it's just fun to play "What If".

Is there a poster named: "I didn't really have to come into this thread and comment on it, I just enjoy joining conversations to say I don't like the topic of the conversation"

Misleading thread title. It implies you want to tear things down as they are right now. A more appropriate title would be "What would the rebuild have looked like if we didn't go in the direction we did this summer?" Or something to that effect.

Not something I want to discuss but doesn't mean that you shouldn't. You should just have a more meaningful title. They way it's worded now makes you sound like an asshat that wants to tear the current situation apart.
