This contract is already looking to be one of the best in the league now. This guy is looking like a superstar.

Throw in Cozens breaking out and Dahlin too. Buffalo has a good looking young core.

The O’Rielly-Thompson deal is looking like the modern day Nieuwendyk for Iginla. St. Louis got their cup and RoR was the MVP. Thompson has morphed into a franchise player for Buffalo. Great to see this turn into a win-win trade when it is all said and done.

It is hard to imagine Thompson breaking out like this with Eichel on the roster, too.

3pts in first 7gp this year

37pts in the last 19gp - just a smidge under 2ppg.

I was skeptical of this contract and didn't think it likely that he'd drive his AAV up by more than 1M. Boy was I wrong!

Looking back on page 1, I thought this contract would end up being market value in a couple years, but oh god this contract is going to end up being an absolute steal. What's this kid's ceiling I wonder?

not sure what all the fuss is about. 5G 1A is pretty standard game for me in NHL 22

Thompson is a beast. Huge frame with massive skill. For $7M a year?

Wow

Wow, I guess that 4 goals in one period and 5 goals in that same game last night made him a lot of money!

His and Robertson's contracts are looking like absolute larceny. Sweetheart deals that will last for a long time. Excellent work by Adams & Nill.

Lindy's contract may have been even better though. Insane value for under $5M/year for 6 years. Ditto Ras contract.

Agreed Mathgod. It is more likely than not these early long term contracts seem to work out Hischier, J Hughes as well just off the top of my head. It also prevents you from having to sign UFAs at a premium.

I think studying your young players and getting them on long term deals earlier than later is a major key to succeeding in the cap era and it's good we got ours done with Lindholm/Hanifin and home grown Andersson early.

You might miss (Edmonton/Nurse) but I believe the reward weighs out the risk in most cases.

I think Dallas really missed the boat by not giving Robertson a max term de in this instance. The current contract is okay, but they are set up for a world of hurt with the single year of RFA status like we were with Tkachuk.

The deal is still for 4 years, so it's not like it's a problem today, but man I bet they're kicking themselves that they didn't double down for 9.5 or something like that.

Robertson't deal only lasts 4 years. Dallas couldn't afford the cap of a longer term deal, so will have to really cough up a ton of money in 4 years and sign him to an 8 year deal which likely will cover some less productive years. Signing his to a deal which walks him to UFA leverage, solves the immediate cap crunch, but really kicks that can down the road.

It's why teams are signing what many think are risky deals for young players to 8 year contracts. As long as the player pans out (and most, but not all, do), it becomes a great contract in terms of cap and especially term.

Biting the cap bullet early in signing elite players to 8 years deals covers basically all of their prime years. When that contract ends, the player has less leverage due to his age.

Yeah the Thompson deal is much better than the Robertson one -- Thompson is a bit older so his 7 year extension is covering basically all his prime years and multiple UFA years. Robertson will come up for another contract right in the middle of his prime and right before UFA, they're going to have to pay him a fortune.

What's funny is that Edmonton probably has one of the best contracts in the league with Draisaitl, but they essentially wasted all that by overpaying Nurse lol.
