Is this the death of Twitter? Wonder what it’s like to blow $44 billion away on an asset and then killing it off.

I suspect Elon is banking heavily on trolls paying the $8 a month just to misrepresent celebrities.

Its going to take a long time for that to amount to $44B.

Yeah it's ridiculous. I get the feeling we are watching the beginning of the end of twitter. As smart as I've been told Musk is it doesn't seem like he knows what he's doing.

Blue checks for everyone, green checks for those with more green to spend. Gold checks for those deemed worthy(and wealthy). Mark my words, we'll have a rainbow of different priced and coloured checks by the end of 2023.

Yeah I can't wait to see the trolls making themselves "Elon" and admitting to being a child molester non-stop. He should just get the IPO over with and take the massive loss here and be done with it.

Yeah no.
Expand Blue capabilities, allow for and ad-free subscription, and pay advertisers for algorithmic-based advertising. Other platorms have no problem doing it and make money, Twitter can too.
Wanna get Musk crazy? Maybe Twitter users who also pay subscription can get a discount on EV charging stations or access to a super-charger, or turn the damn thing into an AMA-like rewards system that gets you discounts in actual retail places. Maybe even cheaper seats on a Hyperloop!

Really depends on the click through rate. Does a TSN trade rumour generate more revenue for twitter or for TSN. On an application like twitter i think the advertisement outweighs the content generation whereas when you get to TikTok and Facebook videos they contain the content within the platform so likely decrease the click through.
Now Musk is screwing it up with no verification step but I think legacy media needs twitter more than twitter needs legacy media.
Now Musks scheme of devaluing the blue checkmark by making it non exclusive is really stupid.

In at least Australia - and Canada soon - the opposite will be true for Facebook and Google where countries are forcing Facebook/Google to pay the news sources. Doesn't apply to twitter yet, but I imagine Twitter generates exponentially less traffic than Facebook or Google.

Part of social media platforms' success is the cool factor. Facebook was cool when it launched. It was cooler than Myspace, so Myspace died and Facebook became a cultural phenomenon.
Twitter was the same deal. Why limit your status updates to just 140 characters when you can post unlimited on Facebook? It didn't make sense at the time, but Twitter was cool back then and also became a mainstay of people's online life.
If Elon makes Twitter not cool (almost a certainty) it'll die. Just like RoboCEO making Facebook uncool by launching his Meta idea.

Twitter has been a train wreck for so long and Musk's acquisition of it is so bizarre, I just cannot bring myself to care what happens to the platform.
Forcing people to pay for a bluecheck when it was mainly the presence of superstar bluechecks that drew people to the platform seems like a profound misunderstanding of the business case for Twitter.

It's going to be hilarious when Putin bulk-buys blue checkmarks for his troll/bot farms and just continues to melt Western brains with misinformation and conspiracy theories. Can't wait.

That’s a whole different issue of governments trying to find methods to protect legacy media. It doesn’t really address whether twitter / Facebook / google add or remove value from the publication or people that use it.
Twitter also by virtue of its structure is different then Facebook/google as displayed by how the blue checkmark crowd use it.
If you simply charged for the checkmark while maintaining its exclusivity I think you’d get widespread adoption.
