				 Senators exploring sale of team

			https://www.tsn.ca/nhl/reports-ottaw...team-1.1871650
"The Ottawa Senators have retained an investment bank to explore a sale of the NHL team, according to multiple reports.

Postmedia and sports business publication Sportico reported Tuesday that the Melnyk family has hired New York-based firm Galatioto Sports Partners to try to sell the franchise. Sportico added that the Senators’ board of directors had "already interviewed sell-side bankers" and "there is significant interest in the franchise."

I'm curious what might happen here. I've always felt like Quebec City's best chance for an NHL team was likely going to be the Senators if they were ever put up for sale. The Sens are one of the lowest valued teams in the NHL so there will be significant interest among other owners for them to go for as much as possible as it would bring the value of every franchise up.
The best situation for Sens fans would be if they could find an owner that was very motivated to move the team downtown. I hope that happens for them.

Didn't they just announce a new arena in the last year or two? If that's already underway, relocation would be a bit of a disaster.

Isn't the city building a new arena for the team?

Yes, a new arena was announced. I'd imagine sale of the team is conditional on it staying put.

Ottawa is a way better market than Quebec City. I just don't see that market ever getting another team unless maybe the league one day looks at expanding to say 34 teams.

I was kind of hoping that the Melnyk Sisters would keep running it - would have been interesting having two 20 year old sisters running a sports team instead of the usual 50+ year old male owners of sports teams.

They are in the planning stages, but are not so far in that they can't pull the plug. It's still very preliminary.

Yes, my sense was that it wasn't a done deal. We know how these deals can fall apart, particularly in the stage this one is in.

As of June 2022 it doesn’t appear to have even gotten to the $$ breakdown yet
https://ottawa.citynews.ca/local-spo...-flats-5517505
Maybe more progress since? Quick google was blank.

They are basically in the same stage as Calgary - the location and general idea exist…details/agreements do not.

Yeah, I think basically the City just gave the Sens dibs on the land, but nothing has really moved forward after that. They haven't really gotten to the concept phase and certainly not the financial phase. The City just said OK to them building it where they want to build it, if they decide they want to.

Having said that, the City isn't going to reserve that land forever either. Eventually the Sens will need to decide to push ahead or not, but I don't think there is a lot of pressure on them as of right now.

Not surprising. I think it was inevitable after Eugene Melnyk passed away. I wonder if the NHL would be entertained by the idea of moving the franchise to Houston?

If someone was willing to buy and move a team to Houston, the NHL would be tripping over themselves to make it happen.

I could see this being a ploy to force the city to build that downtown arena. I wouldn’t want to purchase that team with their current arena situation. I don’t see any scenario they relocate to Quebec City and o doubt they go anywhere but I also do not see a new owner jumping to get their current situation

I guess we'll get to see how accurate the $635M valuation is and if someone will step up and pay the price. I suspect the team may be worth more if allowed to relocate but will be worth less if there are conditions attached to keep the team in Ottawa.

People seriously think moving a professional North American team to a basically monolingual French city is a good idea? Good lord. And you thought Calgary had a hard time attracting free agents.
It's not the 1970's. Will never happen. Keep dreaming.

Calgary-born and raised Ottawa transplant here. Understanding that there are sober economic conversations to be had, I am still always amazed at the speed and giddiness with which many folks on this board call for Canada's capital and fourth-largest city to lose its team. How loud would be the cries of injustice if the roles were reversed.
Ottawa-Gatineau is a great market with a devoted fan base that deserves an owner, team, and building worthy of it. Respectfully, please take your relocation fantasy talk and shove it.
