Then one year for no obvious reason it just took off and we plain ran out. We were giving out my wife's Lindt bars and those little chocolate balls and then it was down to Gum or travel toothpaste.
We dont chew a lot of gum either, but someone once gave us one of those industrial Costco-sized packs of Gum, giving those out.
It was getting dire because after that it was going to be the leftover beer from those 'Craft Beer' Advent Calendars that are chock full of beer that is entirely undrinkable. You know the ones.

toothpaste would be a quick way to getting labeled those crazy people on the street . but probably the most useful thing you could hand out to kids
now i'm just imagining a house handing out beers after 9pm or something

We did Halloween in Brisbane last night and my daughter had a great time trick or treating. Highlight was a house with a keyboarder playing spooky music who switched to let it go when she showed up dressed as Elsa. Also a new cotton candy shop opened that was giving away cotton candy. My wife said we got about 30 people to our house which was less than last year but maybe to be expected for a Monday.
Overall though Halloween is so sad in Australia. Picture the houses in Calgary that don’t celebrate Halloween and that’s about the number of houses here that do. There was like one house participating per block with a few hotspots with higher numbers. This resulted in a lot of kids being driven around to the hot spots instead of just leaving their house and going out locally. I managed to walk everywhere with my daughter but we were dreadfully inefficient getting to like 20 houses in 90 minutes. Not to mention Halloween here brings out all the grumps complaining about American cultural influence all while drinking Jim Beam and Coke and gambling on the NBA.
This has motivated me though to get to Calgary for a proper Halloween sometime in the next few years.

when I was a kid (even very young) we always went out at around 8pm , maybe even later .. i thought that was the norm because the point was to go out in the pitch black of night to get the full creepiness of decorations and lights . then I learned that most people are actually out at 5 or 6 while there's still natural light .. maybe that's a modern day thing though with extra safety and helicopter parentage

Probably not. It's getting just enough light from the house to add to the creepy factor. I might put a little strobe light at it's feet.

Are you not supposed to tell the kids to grab a couple handfuls? I am nearly out of the three boxes that I got. Biggest wave from 6-7.
This is the first time I spent the whole Halloween handing out candy!

I once got a can of V8, the big, quart size (or whatever). The guy said he was out of candy so he went and found what he could. Gotta give him A for effort.
Got a celery stick once.
Hockey cards.

Now that I'm thinking about it, I don't think I've seen those cardboard UNICEF collection boxes around kids neck since I was a kid. I guess that ended at some point?

I've been so good at not breaking into our candy stash prior to Halloween. I broke the seal just now and I have no self control. I'll be in a sugar coma in 15 minutes.

Had a rough time stocking up last night in the SW, Superstore had nothing, literally no boxes of Halloween candy. Walmart was bare except for 1 type of Twizzler/Jolly Rancher bag. Shopper's only had the caramels. Waited too long I guess.

What's with parents slowly following their kids in the car? This isn't a bottle drive, when did this become a thing?

We have been handing out candy for just over an hour now when we'd sort have figured that it would start right about now and are 1 kid short of our all-time record.
We may have under-prepared.
Things are going to get 'Walking Dead' kinds of grim around here.

We had a bunch before it was even dark. Up to 20ish but it’s been slow for a while. Usually 70-100 so not sure what’s going on?

I'm finally he "full size chocolate bar" house!! That was always our favorite house as a kid, that and also there was a guy who worked for Old Dutch at the end of our street, always an old dutch delivery truck parked on the driveway.

Pretty slow start so far, just 8 kids.
But the glow sticks have been a huge hit.
