I asked Tourigny about the early returns on acquiring Juuso:
"He has a lot of poise with the puck, he's really strong on the puck, protects the puck really well and he sees the ice really well. We're playing him a lot of minutes and he's doing a really good job."

Mackey had the better camp for sure, but that doesn't seem like a good enough rationale to pick him over Valimaki. I find the decision extremely curious.
But good for him. I hope he makes the most of the opportunity.

I suspect attitude was a major contributing factor in the coaches and managements decision between the two.

I guess Darryl’s assessment of the player was wrong and [checks notes] NHL coach Andre Tourigny is correct.

Yeah.. Ummm.... if they're giving him a lot of minutes why is he ranked 6/6 for average time on ice for their regular defensemen?

Frankly I don't think those two things are mutually exclusive at all

I have a little more confidence in Sutter versus the guy I had to google.

Maybe the truth is he's good enough for Arizona. That doesn't mean he's good enough for Calgary.

Yeah flames fans shouldn't feel bad if he's getting minutes in Arizona. They are literally doing all they can to not win hockey games right now.

Going with Sutter's opinion is the smart play, if you had to choose between them... I mean they seem to have different opinions on him
Hall of fame, top 5 coach of all time or the guy the coyotes hired that will probably disappear from the nhl head coaching ranks within 5 years...

It is not an either/or with respect to the 2 coaches. JC
The Flames had 10 defensemen in camp and Valimaki couldn't make the top 8, so he got waived (correctly and deservedly so, IMO).
The Yotes have the weakest roster in the NHL, and he has managed to grab the 6th spot for now. That's great, happy for him. When asked about him, the coach is going to point out the things he is doing well, and is going to make positive comments about him. Of course.
That doesn't make the Yotes coach wrong.
When did the world turn so black and white?

he seemed liked good kid, whose career got sidetracked by injury and then covid...
his confidence really needs to be rebuilt from the ground up - the comment of not having to worry about winning games speaks to that imo... players that at the top of their game play with swagger; they want to play in high pressure games and situations.
Good luck to the kid. Hope he's able to figure things out

I mean are they really even trying to win? Let’s see in two years if he is still in the NHL.
He probably still has a higher ceiling than Mackey because he’s younger. My guess is he’d still be here if he was making less money.

This is the thing...people are gonna say wow two assists he is doing great now, meanwhile he can't defend.
Good for a team that wants to lose I guess

I mean look at Stone for us. His counting stats are amazing but would anyone want him to be our everyday sixth defensemen if Kylington was back? Well no because Stones defensive game is lacking and Sutter has always said so.

Kylington is over rated. He was on fire to start last year but once cooled off was just a depth defenseman.

I dont know what is going on with him, but but his game fell apart entirely once Tanev was out.

Tanev is 1.5 of every pairing he's been a part of. Really nice to see him with an actual bona fide NHL partner this year.

I don’t think he’ll ever be top pairing material but he could have a career as a bottom 4 guy if he round out his game with experience. Because of injuries his developmental timeline in the NHL just didn’t fit with the team’s win-now window.
