They have 2 games left in October. They just might not win a game in October.

As bad as it sounds, they are only 4 points back of Edmonton. That should be enough of a carrot to make a drastic trade of their futures to try and claw their way back.

It would be hilarious if this management group traded futures for immediate help right now. It would be very on brand for them and would show how inept they are. Watching that game last night, they were lucky to be within a goal of Carolina. It was a boring game with very little in terms of action but Carolina was carrying the play the entire time.

I think Bruce's days were already numbered, new GM, wouldn't extend him in the summer, and now with this start? Jim never seemed to like him from the start. Only question is does he fire him soon or stay in the Bedard sweepstakes. Hometown superstar, part of me thinks Rutherford knows exactly what he's doing

Rutherford is doing what he was told to do. Go for a cup. Even if the team is a bubble play-off team coming off back-to-back-to-back awful starts to the season. Even if the defense core is scary thin (as we are seeing with injuries to three of the team's top six on the depth chart going into training camp). Ownership gave the marching orders and Rutherford has to follow them if he wants to get paid.

If the team hadn't been so hot in the back half of last season we may have seen the plug pulled but even if they hadn't, I'm willing to bet the marching orders would not have changed. Aquilini, who is also a big fan, is the team's biggest problem.

Super glad the pumpkin patch story isn't true.

What's Barry Trotz up to these days? I have no clue if he has a relationship with Rutherford but they seem like they would.

I think Rutherford is smart enough to realize that Bruce isn't the problem here.

I'm not falling for that. I come home and I get the Harry Potter storage closet under the stairs.

You know that scene in Gladiator where Commodus wants to have Maximus killed in the arena but everyone's cheering for him so he reluctantly gives the thumbs up?

That's how I imagine Rutherford's attitude towards Boudreau.

Rutherford picked Boudreau. There's some misconception that they were hired at the exact same time. Rutherford was being consulted up to a month before the regime change happened.

Something doesn't add up here, because in his HNIC interview he sure made it sound like the contract given to Boudreau was extended by the previous regime.

Also, I don't buy this notion that he is somehow unwittingly committed to building a playoff team this year at Aquilini's behest, and against his own better judgement. Rutherford took the job knowing full well what ownership wanted, so it seems pretty likely to ke that he and Alvin have badly misjudged this roster.

They expected to have a better return in trade market

From everything at the time its clear they wanted to move miller for picks and/or help on D. But the market cratered for older forwards when so many were made available, pacioretty going to carolina for free didnt help. Hurt free agent forwards as well, just look at what kadri was expected to get in june, and the deal you guys got him at, lower than expected

They were never going to do a tear down with the pieces already in place, Rutherford has always tried to do it on the fly

They can talk all they want too, but the only clear sign of s full rebuild would be a demko trade
