They aren't tanking, and never have. They're at their max potential.

Just to keep this top of mind and top of the page, Edmonton is No Good. I appreciate that McDrai both get a minus for the EN goal. Looks good on 'em.

This will be the next thing the greasers will try to get changed…just like offsetting minor penalties go to 4 v 4 instead of the historical 5 v 5 which was done to get more open ice for Gretzky etcetera.

Waaah it punishes great players who have to take an empty net minus because they have to play, to try to tie it up. It’s like a power play!

They rely so much on the bull#### calls it’s unreal.
the saddest way to hockey . if you can't hold your own at 5 on 5 you shouldn't be in the conversation with top teams imo

One of the biggest reasons I was so frustrated watching the playoffs last year. I liked when they were a battle and the refs let more go, so it wasn't nearly as fun watching them call the games like they were the regular season. Sucked out a lot of the energy for me, but was also such a crutch for teams like the Oilers

Oilers let Blumel walk for nothing, currently lighting up the AHL.

Even better, they may have lost his rights because they didn't understand the rules: https://www.coppernblue.com/2021/6/2...namo-pardubice

He was drafted after playing 2 seasons in the USHL, which is typically the feeder league for the NCAA. If he became a college player within 2 years of his draft, the Oilers would have held his rights for a minimum of 4 years. However, he went back to Czechia and played in their men's league for the 2 seasons after his draft, so his rights were treated like a player drafted out of junior, which is only 2 years.

Strangely enough, if he had been drafted after a season playing in the Czech league, they would have held his rights for 4 years as a European pick.

My new favourite Oiler fan conspiracy theory is that McDavid and Draisaitl broke the NHL and made scoring too easy, so now the NHL needs to impede their progress to keep the flood gates closed.

HF Boards is comedy gold.

Lol! This.

You want to know whats even funnier? You remember that time Lowe (or was it MacT?) said that the Oilers were currently karmically paying for their success in the 80s?

Well right now they've got a couple good players that they trot out for half the game night after night after night.

So they went to the WCF last season...on the backs of those horses. The longer and deeper they fluke their way in the playoffs the longer and harder they ride those horses.

Theres limits to how long you can keep that up. So, ironically, the more playoff success they have....the less playoff success they are likely to have in the future.

You have that exactly backwards. Offsetting minors always were played 4 on 4 until 1985, when they changed the rule to make it 5 on 5 to cut down the open ice for Gretzky & co.

The "Gretzky Rule" or The "Oilers Rule" or something like that, if I remember correctly.

The Oilers would go out of their way to have altercations after the whistle that would result in coincidental minors so they would have the advantage 4-4. The NHL decided that coincidental minors shouldn't give a team an advantage and made it 5-5.

Years later when the NHL was desparate for more offense, they brought the 4-4 back.

Maybe I'm getting old and soft. But its hard not to feel sorry for some members of the Oilers fan base. I mean they have a flash of hope, like last years little playoff surge. like missing the playoffs 12 out of the last 16 years. Then getting to the semi's only for the Avs to beat the holy hell out of them. Then they hype their team only for them to come out to a dismal start where they can't do anything right.

Ok, I'm wrong I don't feel sorry for them after all of their self promotion. And hey did you see that most of the Oiler fans that flooded this threat over the summer have once again found a reason to vanish?

but when you look at that Oilers team, Oilers fans should feel that impending feeling of doom.

I mean out of their 16 goals, only 6 have been 5v5. While they have their usual strong pp their penalty killing is dreadful. like 72% dreadful.

Evander Kane, not great so far. Outside of Draisaitl and McDavid, for the most part nobody else is contributing.

their future derpth is lucking like a can of pineapples. Bouchard looks like hot trash, Holloway who was hyped as a solution to their lack of depth is far from ready for the NHL. Boberg garbage.

Campbell the so called vezina consideration goalie has been underwhelming.

Their systems look terrible. The miracle worker in their coach, is looking overwhelmed and was literally called out by their captain for lazy practices.

McDavid is starting to look like a hobo again, the Oilers are hoping their new jersey's aren't aerodynamically sound.

Oh and the vaunted center depth of McDavid, Draisaitl and Hopkins don't look so good. Hopkins has had his moment, but Draisaitl is spending more time on McDavid's line.

I've said in the past the NHL needs to bring back relegation so they can send the Oilers to the AHL where they might be competitive.

But their team is looking like garbage, smells like a 6 week old pizza and is oh so very much no good.
