Former Flame performance - Rhett Warrener is a cohost on the Barn Burner podcast. He was very grumpy and taking shots at Pinder. He has consumed 3-4 home made smash burgers in the past few days.

I don't think that's how it works -- Mangiapane didn't stall out earning his way up from the fourth line to the third line to the top six, and Dube is starting to do it this year.
The one thing I do wish they did more was play him on special teams. I think Sutter started to give him PK minutes, and I recall him getting some PP time in the bubble, but Florida did both. I think the problem with Bennett was that he would try to do too much in the 12 minutes he got each game with the Flames, whereas with 17-18 minutes a game in Florida he was more engaged and could just play without thinking as much.

I hate Bennett more than Goodrow or Tkachuk. played over 400 games here and tried about about 10% of the time. loser

Always subjective, but to me that's an odd take.
I think a good argument can be made for limited hockey sense and poor deployment, but I never got the feeling that effort was an issue for Bennett.
Could almost make the argument that trying to hard played into his failures.

Looking at faceoffs, considering he takes them in all three situations (5v5, 5v4, 4v5), I filtered faceoff stats on NHL.com to only players who have taken 50 5v5, 10 5v4 and 5 4v5 faceoffs or more. The goal isn't to look for "faceoff specialists" who excel at winning draws, but don't play on the PP or PK etc. The point is to compare Monahan to his peers.
So, using that criteria, Monahan is:
- 1st in all situations (63.5%) (ahead of Kopitar)
- 2nd in 5v5 (63.9%) (behind Kopitar)
- 5th in 5v4 (63.6%) (behind Bergeron) [Lindy is 1st at 81.8%(!!)]
- 4th in 4v5 (60%) (behind Draisaitl)
- 6th in OZ (57.7%) (behind Stephenson)
- 1st in NZ (75%) (ahead of Kopitar)
- 1st in DZ (64.3%) (ahead of Bergeron)
|
Something is off with this considering Monahan has only taken 36 even strength faceoffs.

Johnny with two more goals tonight. He's going to be great value if he can keep up the point production he has started with.

No denying that he's off to an excellent start. He's almost single handedly keeping the Jackets out of Bedard contention.

He's such an underrated player. A lot of media and such see him as a complementary, small, offensive winger but he's a legit franchise player that can carry teams on his back. Huberdeau is a great player but you can already see that the Flames miss Gaudreau's ability to carry the puck and drive the play. He's a special player. Johnny has nobody to blame but himself for being underpaid but the Jackets have an absolute steal of a contract here.

Tkachuk now at 8 points in 5 games so far. Maybe Florida really have got a ppg+ star in him even without Johnny and Lindholm.

nobody scoffed at PPG
It was the "Generational Player" talk that raised eyebrows (for good reason)
He is not in the McDavid/Matthews conversation

Probably also worth highlighting that MT took an incredibly selfish double minor to cost his team the game.

I've been through that mindset. Take someone down, you know you didn't really go too hard on em so they must be selling it, you know someone bought it, so you think eff it, I'm going all in on this one ..
Yup, definitely been there. Boneheaded

I guess if you figure Kucherov has a better chance of scoring on that play than the Lightning do on a PP in OT, you might as well take the penalty. Then, the stuff after the play is just trying to goad someone into retaliating and hoping the refs call an even-up penalty.

GOAT!

Who claimed Tkachuk is a generational talent? I heard "unicorn" but not "generational."
Unicorn just means rare or unique, and that's just something the media said anyway. I really don't understand why it got so many people all bent out of shape. Matthew Tkachuk is a unique player. Tkachuk and Marchand are the only similar players with 100pt seasons, but Tkachuk fights - Marchand doesn't. Ergo, Tkachuk is unique. Also, he has 3 goals and 5 assists in his first 5 games in Florida... are we still saying he needs Johnny in order to put up points?
I'm happy with the return we got in the trade, especially under the circumstances, but I also recognize we lost a hell of a player in the deal. It helps that we had no choice in the matter, but we still lost a player that no team in their right mind would have willingly traded at this point in his career.
