Release and catch: Repeat offender arrested two hours after getting out of jail

They followed him downtown, where he walked into a retail store and allegedly stole $330 worth of leggings. He was arrested.

At the time, Addison notes, he “had been out of custody for two hours, 18 minutes.”

It's been a wild 24 hours in Burnaby in particular with the cop getting stabbed to death at a homeless encampment in Burnaby today and then yesterday, two deceased people were found inside a car outside of a highschool.

Sad news about the RCMP officer.

It seems like this homeless crisis and drugs/ODs are out of control and something needs to be done. Is the provincial government out there actually doing anything. It almost seems like it’s become a federal issue and Trudeau is MIA as usual, same with Singh, isn’t Burnaby his or close to his riding?
You can talk about affordable housing all you want but things are clearly not working.

Maybe it’s time for some mandatory jail sentences for loitering, possession or being under the influence, like 90 days. Sober some of these people up to start with and get them off drugs.

That’s the thing, loitering is what school kids do at 7/11 or wherever, what I mean is tents on public streets and spaces. You have to establish standards as to what’s allowed and what isn’t.

An officer lost their life and the perpetrator was shot and wounded by police, over what, right?

For anyone interested, the BC public service union ratified their agreement with the province. It was really split though (53% in favour and only a 71% turnout).

Reading on the Reddit thread about it, it sounds like a lot of people who voted in favour only did so because a strike longer than a month would mean not being able to pay rent or food insecurity.

Extra hard to go on strike while in the midst of dramatic rent and food inflation. Weren't they striking for pay increases to match inflation?

Wound't be OD's, there's many of those daily. This had the front window tarped off, and Homicide and Forensics called in and deep into investigation.

Homicide gets called out to many non criminal deaths but it's more just to quickly determine that it's actually OD/suicide so someone can't cover up a murder at home with only paramedics and a body pick up involved. If the media is writing that Homicide and forensics are involved that means it's way past that and likely a double homicide.

Just do the Portugal model (this means kind of what afc said plus give law enforcement some power back). Just at least try it for a couple years and see what works. It is so frustrating that another place literally solved this problem and Canadians can’t get out of their own way yet 6 people die daily on the streets. Plus cops, apparently.

Yep that needs to be a consideration for sure.

In additional to that I would like to see the following done:

1) Create a 'Psychiatric Urgent Care' facility. Much like a hospital in that it is open 24/7, staffed with professionals with a variety of skill sets, but completely different in its function and purpose. A Psychiatric Urgent Care facility is a completely separate building staffed with mental health professionals that have experiences in helping and treating those with addiction issues, domestic abuse victims, people suffering from ptsd, depression, mental disorders like schizophrenia, etc. While this of course would not get everyone off the street it would at the very least capture a segment of the population not getting the mental health supports they need and perhaps reduce the burden being placed on other streams of front line emergency response and hospitals where those who are trained in treating medical problems are being asked to treat patients with severe mental health issues.

2) Include counseling with registered clinical counsellor as part of our Canadian health care services.

3) Vastly reduce the amount of opioids being prescribed by health professionals for post op patients / patients experiencing some pain.
