No idea, they're evaluating him today.

All true.

But as an employee, Tkachuk had every right to look after himself.

As teams have shown zero loyalty to players when they get in the way of what the team wants to do.

Did Calgary give a damn about Monny? No, and I'm not saying they should, but it's a two way street.

Much like Tkachuk, Calgary was looking out for #1.

With hindsight, I’m glad they’re both gone.

Its pretty much the opposite though isn't it? seems that way with most fans

I think the point is Tkachuk was looking out for himself and it happened to work out for the Flames...he didn't care, like at all

I bet deep down he will be choked if the Flames are better than the Panthers this season

Tkachuk’s intentions were clear from the day he signed his last contract with the Flames.

The only question was whether he would sign a long-term deal here if the Flames backed up TWO Brinks trucks. As it turned out, no.

Yeah I don't think you'd have to dig that deep. He will hate that.

I don't think Tkachuk ever had any intention of being here long term, so like you said, he was just out for #1 and couldn't give a damn about the team. With that said, he was definitely more professional about the situation than Johnny was and allowed us to keep our team rolling, but it was also mutually beneficial for him to do that so that he could cash in when his value was the highest. Who knows what his contract would have looked like next year without Johnny passing him the puck.

So I like to look at it as Johnny actually wanted to be here and sign long term and Tkachuk had no intention of doing so.
I know people like to think differently since there is a championship you can win involved but to me its like any other employer. I do work, you give me money. If my life goals align with the company goals and I like the city great. If not its my right to go somewhere else if I choose. We all move around for better opportunity and that's fine. Its a transactional relationship nothing more. Chucky was upfront and we got a great package for him. I'm more than happy with how he handled it.

Panthers are pretty desperate for help on D. I say we trade them Weegar for Chucky.

100% agree, Tkachuk exercised a right he earned with great play for this team. With that being said, I'm not going to cheer for the guy when he comes to town just because his interests aligned with ours and we got a great deal for him. He clearly didn't want to be here in Calgary, and just like he had the right to not want to be here, I have the right to hope he performs poorly.

The thing that perplexes me is how polarised opinions are of both players. BOTH Gaudreau and Tkachuk acted selfishly; BOTH did what they believed to be best for them and their families; BOTH did absolutely nothing wrong.

I'd disagree with this last bit. Tkachuk gave the Flames clear notice of his intentions at a time when they could do something constructive about it. Gaudreau didn't.

It is highly unprofessional to go on negotiating terms until the eleventh hour, and then suddenly decide you have no interest in making a deal on any terms.

Being unprofessional doesn't mean he did anything wrong though. He exercised his rights as a UFA. I'm not saying I agree with what he did, or that he couldn't have handled the situation better and helped the team out more, but he didn't do anything "wrong".

I would add to that no matter how unprofessional his actions from the outside appear we have no idea how or why Gaudreau arrived at the decision on which he settled, and likely never will.

Sutter likes to point out that the Flames used 10 defencemen in their 2004 playoff run. He also likes to add that it wasn’t enough.
