Drool. Combine that with one of the best 1-6 D groups and one of the best goalies in the league.

The thing is, the shortage of good RWs is league-wide. It's the literal mirror image of the 1980s, when the Flames won the Cup with Colin Patterson at LW on the first line, and the Oilers won it twice before they brought in Esa Tikkanen and put him on Gretzky's left. I still remember games when they had Dave Semenko in that spot.
If your biggest weakness is also the weakness of most other contenders, that's not really something to worry about.
|
So are there an abundance or a shortage of RWs?
I think Mangiapane is good in a top 6 role but do question Toffoli. 23 pts in, what, 37 games not on the top line, perhaps worth a few games, as he also has a Cup
But for that price tag, I would think there is little proven top 6 talent available at a reasonable cost

Definitely a shortage. Whereas all through the 80s it was a shortage of LWs. Once they develop, these situations take years to correct.

As I mentioned, the '89 Flames had Colin Patterson on the first line. He scored just 38 points (and that in a much higher-scoring era), but he was the guy on that line who got into the tough areas and got his nose dirty. I think Toffoli can be suited for a similar role alongside Lindholm and Huberdeau.
Toffoli's career production prorates to 49 points per 82 games, which is definitely a top-6 number. He'll never replace Tkachuk's offence on the first line, but when the second line is so much improved, I don't think he needs to.

What, we have to be asked now before saying things on CP? OK, you set an example by shutting up, because I don't see anyone asking you to post anything.
I'm annoyed because YOU are the way you are. Like this, for instance:
I know a lot of posters on this site think exactly the same of you. But your insult is duly noted. I guess we can add one more to the long, long list of people you're a jerk to.
(Of course, you don't list even a single opinion of mine that is actually bad. I very much doubt you have kept track of my opinions sufficiently to form any cogent judgement on the topic, but hey, who cares about facts when there's a cheap insult to be tossed?)
|
You didn’t ask why I thought he was a great fit, you just went on a weird Button rant
And it’s cool if other posters don’t think Kane is a good fit. Was there… going to be a winner crowned, or something? A trophy for who had the best opinion? Maybe that’s reserved for best street fighter or whatever is happening in your head lol.
And yeah the weighting opinion thing was just a joke. I don’t actually think your opinions are bad. Or good. They exist without my acknowledgement all on their own. Good for you, man. Have fun with it!

Add Konecny to this team and it’s better but you still have cap problems next year
Add Kane you’re the best team in the league.
I’m not saying do it now but at or close to the deadline if this team is near the top and you can get a deal done you get Kane.

Personally, I don't think we need anyone too amazing beside Huberdeau and Lindholm. We just need someone who can fit that Anthony Duclair role opposite Huberdeau. Dube would have been the obvious choice, but he's found a glove like fit on our de facto first line with Mangiapane and Kadri. I could still see either Matthew Phillips or Matthew Coronato doing well opposite Huberdeau. Toffoli is just not the right fit.

I think they’ll give it 20 games at least but I agree. It’s not that Toffoli is bad but the combo of the three looks off.

Two games...one goal, a post, other glorious chances
Team 2-0 against stiff competition
Maybe we could give it more time before deciding it's "not the right fit"

Granted we’re only 3 games in but Kane only has one assist and no goals. Has anyone watched him at all? Is he hitting a wall this year?

All of these things are far too premature.
The first line is likely going to find a rhythm.
The second line is hot to start but will likely balance out.
Kane might not have exploded in the first 3 games but he’ll be fine and make the best of playing with whoever he plays with.
That’s why rentals have some appeal for the Flames this year. We need to see where we’re really at as a team before making any moves and see who is available/who can fill those needs properly. I’m not ready to write of Toffoli or a rental like Kane nor am I ready to declare the Kadri line our de facto 1st line.

He's no longer on a "show me" contract. That said I have been listening to 960 this morning and it's kind of hilarious how fans and media are getting way to far ahead of things here after a week of hockey.

Think they were talking about Patrick, and not Evander.
Evander has 2 assists in 2 games.

agreed, give it sometime, then make a judgement call. if Toffoli doesn't work out, any thoughts on adding Nick Ritchie? he seems to have a decent scoring touch along with size and ok speed (from what I've only seen on highlights)

Patrick Kane. I just wonder if the team around him is now so bad it’s going to mess with his points, if he’s starting to slow down or if he’s just off to a slow start.

I just find it funny that people who are upset with the slow start for Toffoli are eager to get a guy who is also off to a slow start.

Is Toffoli off to a slow start? He's never been a consistent PPG guy. He's a 25 goal and 50 point player.
