Given the amount of time he's been in office I'm not sure those results are any less damning.

I imagine the "Nothing" vote is more of an "I don't know"

interesting those polls on the leaders - as lately it seems there are several pools that put the conservatives ahead of the liberals.
but i suppose maybe that is just more of a statement that maybe folks are just getting tired of the liberals/NDP being in power.
Or maybe all the polls are just GIGO

That’s been consistent with the last several years, though. Bunch of people who would like to vote CPC but don’t because the leader sucks ####, or are heavily located in select tidings (so it seems like big numbers but it’s not in areas it matters).
Long way before an election, but once again it’s CPC’s election to lose and they chose the worst man for the job, so we’ll see how it turns out.

I always wonder about these polls seeing it's nearly the same every election where the Conservatives trend higher and then the election happens. Maybe they just aren't polling enough people in Toronto and Montreal.

It's more, "Hello, pollster. I am one of the vast majority of people who does not follow politics and am only vaguely aware, if even that, that Pierre Poilievre is the name of a human being who exists. I do know Justin Trudeau and I don't like that guy very much".
Then as the election approaches they become aware that Poilievre exists and is terrible, and reverse course.

What happened to guys like Harper and Manning who were pretty big Libertarian and Social conservatives but at least understood something about electability and governing towards Center.
It seems that people identify with Trumps rise and the big lie as the most effective way to garner votes. I just don’t see the demographics working though.

That was due to vote splitting with the PCs. He would have been successful as the leader of a combined party.

That's also a big reason why they won resoundingly in the election this year. For as nutty as Doug Ford has been, the OPCP haven't completely fallen off the rails and actually do sane things once in a while, especially in comparison to what's taking hold in the West.

I think part of it was that Ford can be pushed into eventually doing the right thing once in a while, rather that irrationally sticking to conservative ideology in spite of evidence. He doesn't always pull back from dumb policy decisions, but he isn't like other populists in how rigidly he holds on to them.
With respect to his relationship with the federal government, I think he understands that working nicely with the feds largely plays well to the Ontarian electorate.

This is also a smart play for his personal political ambitions. Should PP fail, Conservative elder statesmen can point to the convoy support / siding with the crazy people, and Doug will be the shining beacon of a new sane conservative movement.

It isn't surprising that they would pander to the center knowing that Ontarians will vote for the other center party if they don't. AB politics are governed by the fact that the conservative parties are nearly invincible.

Almost as if they are just seeing a political opportunity and don't actual mean what they say.
If a boatload of protesters blocked access to the oilsands and the police wouldn't clear them out - the UCP would be calling for emergency measures in about 5 seconds.
