I should also point out that on the DTES drugs are effectively decriminalized, no one is being arrested down there for the use or possession of minor personal amounts, people happily shoot up in front of the police station

Starting January 1, 2023, possession of most drugs for personal use will be officially decriminalized.

That's seems true outside the DTES too.

Yes and no. It really depends on the individual police force. I shared an office with a few criminal lawyers. A large part of their client base was young men who'd been busted using cocaine outside of clubs. They'd gotten so used to the Vancouver attitude, that they carried it over to Whistler. The Whistler police force would just wait outside with plain clothes officers and round up several people a night.

Seemed like a pretty arbitrary way to potentially destroy some kids life with a drug charge.

I really just meant it's not contained to the parts of Vancouver that are in the DTES and can be easily encountered all over downtown and other parts of the city. In Vancouver at least it would be weird to go on a walk through downtown and not see someone openly doing drugs without concern for law enforcement

Destroy a kids life? Spare me the drama. Good grief, even if the kid got arrested they likely only got their coke confiscated. And if for some inexplicable reason he got charged the Crown almost certainly would not proceed with a simple possession charge. I think your defence lawyer neighbours are exaggerating just a tad.

Ken Sim and ABC with a resounding victory in the Vancouver municipal elections yesterday. Have to think that public fatigue with the crime/disorder situation was a major factor.

Definitely.
I found my peer group was much more engaged in this election than any municipal election before that I've been here for. People are fed up and hoping the change will help.

Most people I know were just straight up voting affidavit Kennedy. Bit of a dangerous strategy, as that's partly how Trump got elected, but the status quo is abysmal.

I know one of the guys that won a councillor position in Coquitlam. He was only one of two who wasn’t already previously there. His platform is geared towards implementing affordable housing models. He wants to steer the city away from single family dwellings and luxury condos which I think is a good thing.

It's definitely the most interest I've had in a municipal election before, spurred by conditions that seem like a point of desperation for many in the city. I really hope an impact can be made to help a lot of people.

Yet Vancouver had a pretty low turnout. Kamloops was interesting as the "bus all the homeless out of town" candidate won mayor, but all the "take care of our homeless" councillors got seats

Now to see whether the centre-right can actually do anything about it.

The NPA under Campbell never could when they were in charge

Another shooting (homicide) this morning at UBC golf course, followed by a torched out car a few blocks away.

Media has already used the phrase "targeted shooting". Almost certainly a gang hit, and the burnt out car was the getaway vehicle.

10AM local is a bit early for these fellas to be out tracking their enemies! That's some commitment.

Also, if a life of crime can't get you onto a better green than the UBC Golf Course, what's the point?
