Maybe he thought war was like in the movies and he could just thread the needle with his tracks?

Either way, what a dummy. Which could be said for the entire Russian government and military and large swaths of their population.

How far we've come when Nixon seems like a voice of reason. He would have been an intelligent president if he didn't act like a gangster in office - a trait shared by Putin. Also, who is taking vertical videos in 1992?

The 90s were a crazy time. So much peace and optimism that the American public consciousness turned to extraterrestrial threats (Aliens and UFA craze). The Cold War was over. The economy was booming. Clinton had surpluses. People actually thought communism was ending and there was a chance for Russian to join the West and even for China to turn to Democracy.

Filthy slobs, guys stealing unattended belongings from one another. Curious to see what happens when these conscripts start freezing to death in the middle of winter.

Would be nice if someone on the Ukraine side could pinpoint the camp's location from that video and help those boys warm up with some artillery strikes

The white tents look like they might be OK, but when he showed us the camp he was in? Wow, like going back 100 years. These boys are ####ed.

At least the green tents are set up correctly.

Honest question, why do we want that island?

We probably don't. But assuming from the description he's talking about Sakhalin, it is sitting on top of massive, well-located natural gas reserves. So someone wants it...

3 years in a Russian prison is probably safer than a few more months in Ukraine.

Purely financial. Holding ports at both sides of the Pacific would be a huge advantage. The location between Korea and Japan gives off a pre-takeover Hong Kong vibe, as well. As mentioned, the natural resources make this unlikely, but.... Alaska.... and something in me just wants to see Russia disintegrate a little bit more.

Yeah, but in the hypothetical where the Russians are willing to sell both Korea and Japan would outbid us. They'd both love to have control over a large, cheap, nearby energy source.

This has me wondering - did Canada "bid" on Alaska?

Edit - Googled for myself... a) Canada was still a British colony and wasn't a country yet and b) Great Britain and Russia were still imperialistic rivals, so the US was perceived to be the friendlier purchaser from the Russian perspective.
