They should lose this one. Emotional games like last night suck the energy out of teams. Add in the fact that it was a long day yesterday with the whole early arrival red carpet thing and the late night travel heading into the B2B, this game is served on a platter for the Flames home opener.
If they find a way to win this I’ll be beyond impressed but everything’s against them.
Quote:
Not making it a thing, but it is so wild that the Avs got in at 3:45am and they have to play tonight after playing last night.
Bad schedule optimization.
Quote:
Great early test for the Avs. Easy, easy win last night where they never looked threatened. Followed up by a great Calgary team looking to stake their claim to the Western Conference.
Will be interesting to see how the boys come out tonight.
Quote:
WCF preview. Book it.
Also, this game should be a scheduled loss.
Quote:
this really shouldve been the WCF last year
Quote:
Yep, this is a scheduled loss.
Quote:
Sucks to have a scheduled loss as your 2nd game of the season, but the Avs were remarkably good in these situations last year. I'll be happy with a point and thrilled with 2. Not expecting much given the circumstances...except for an inevitable Naz hatty
Quote:
Apparently the Flames have lost 12 straight home openers. That's crazy.
Quote:
Easy win. Scheduled win. Whatever you wanna call it. Flames haven’t won a season opener since 2009, won’t be changing tonight. Mack & Makar lead the way.
Quote:
Might be the most obvious scheduled loss of the season. Not sure why the cup champs have to play B2B to open the season AND travel to do so. Hope the Flames start off as slow as their Alberta counterparts did last night.
A Remarkably Fortunate Bounce

Whaaaaa.... noice

You won't get a luckier goal than that.

Lol, heard Calgary player yell "Makar is coming! Tight! Tight!"

Words cannot describe how much joy it brings me to not see Tkachuk chewing his mouthpiece like cow during this game. Also nice to see our former boys Kadri and Big Z!
A Naz-Sized Chasm
Quote:
This will never be the same without Kadri
Quote:
We’re all going to hate Kadri so much by the end of the first period tonight lol.
Quote:
Quote:
The Flames center depth has to be top 5.
Quote:
I'm VERY curious to see how Kadri will perform this year.
At this time of the year last year, Kadri was a meh 2nd line center, on the wrong end of the age curve, already on the decline at 31 and one bone headed hit away from being suspended.
One year later, at 32 with an amazing career year behind him, a fat contract in his back pocket and a Stanley Cup ring on his finger, he is in large part the reason why many evaluate the Flames Center Depth as somewhere between the best in the league and Top 5ish.
So, it will be pretty interesting to see how that movie unfolds...starting tonight!
Quote:
Kadri will score a hat trick, run Georgiev, and have a water bottle thrown at him by the end of the night.
Quote:
That Kadri POS always drawing phantom calls.
Quote:
Screw that Kadri guy. Dirtiest player in the game!
Quote:
Look I'm a blues fan
Kadri ####ing ran the goalie on purpose
Quote:
Well just like that the Avs look like a 1 line team again they need a 2nd line center lol.
Quote:
Lol called it all summer, 2C is a problem. And I knew posters who said it would fine are already bitching about it.
Should have used G to get a reasonable 2C.
Quote:
Flames are the better team until we do something to solve the 2C position and probably add an upgraded depth forward as well
Quote:
Ha ha who was dat guy draped all over Frankie
Quote:
It is Francouz god given right to throw a water bottle at Kadri.
Getting Suttered
Quote:
Okay maybe the Flames ARE cup favorites.
Quote:
Shots 12-2 lmao
Quote:
Outshot 14-3 but tied 1-1.
Why waste time shoot lot when few shot do trick?
Quote:
I don’t think shots being 16-3 is entirely on the jet lag. This Flames team is pretty solid.
Quote:
This is going to end extremely ugly.
Quote:
Jesus we're gonna get steamrolled if we keep this up haha.
Quote:
Toews, Frank and Nuke just pulled a miracle out of their hats, keeping that one out.
Quote:
We look like we're skating in quicksand. This could be 5-1 already.
Quote:
This game is wild and completely unsustainable
Quote:
Hi everyone. Hope youve all been well.
I see we’re skating through sludge tonight.
Quote:
fourth line has been … putrid? Is that the word?
Quote:
Avs simply getting outclassed, outplayed and bullied to a level I havent seen since the Bruins game in Boston last season.

4 shots but hey one goal behind only

4 shots. Holy f***, thank you Frankie

brutal coverage!!

Everyone puck watching. Newhook and Manson both played that really poorly.

Lucky as fuxk to be even after 1

You knew the Flames would come out fired up. Home opener ..1st game monkey, against the AVs. Tied after 1 is right where we want to be.Theres still 2 periods.

Well, we had a good run.
Quote:
What the hell is going on with this game? Two shorthanded goals for the Flames, Cale in the box for the second time, defense missing assignments...ugh.
But it's just the second game of the year....let the Flames glory in this while we go on to the SCF for the second year in a row.
Quote:
Mikko lazy ass play on the boards

The boys don’t seem like they’ve gotten over the hangover

Cant even remember the last time the Avs game up a shorthanded goal
Quote:
Always seems to start slow. The Avs are a one line team again. They did nothing to replace Kadri and Bura and its showing these first two games some. You get away with it against Chicago. You dont get away with it against the might Flamers.

The Avs are going to wake up in the last 10 minutes of the third, but it'll end up being about 10 minutes too late.
We don't play them again until January 18th. Then on February 25, which is another back to back for us while they're rested. Calgary fans are genuinely gonna think they're better than us.

Is this game as bad as the box score indicates lol

Worse. We are getting beat in a similar manner to how we beat other teams.

Glad we showed life in the third. Too bad it took us that long to get going. We looked like we played a back 2 back against a fresh, quality team. Happy to see MacKinnon and Byram get their first goal. Rants was a stud out there. His passing is unreal. Less impressed with our depth but that was to be expected.

Tkachuk talking about wearing shorts, sandals and driving golf carts everywhere. Shows what/where his priorities are lol.

I don't see how an NHL referee doesn't see that Kadri's route is him skating straight into the goaltender. It's an obvious dive play.
Quote:
Kadri is a slime lol. Them moment he felt contact he flung himself at the goalie.
Quote:
Coach Sutter really has those boys flying. What's up with Kadri, he looks like he's tweaking out in East Village.
Quote:
Clear as day to everyone except little Kelly Sutherland.
That play right there underscores how incompetent NHL officials are. Everyone that has watched Kadri more than once knows that he runs goalies, falls into goalies, etc whenever he can, which is what happened there. But it’s a Colorado penalty.
Comical how easy these morons get sucked by pest players.

Entertaining win to start the year — I remember last year’s games against the Avs were track meets, but I felt tonight the Flames were with them step for step (having them play last night probably helped).
As for the new guys, I was very impressed seeing them live. Kadri has a great motor and was very noticeable tonight — thought his line looked really good. Huberdeau has elite vision and is so poised with the puck, no panic at all. Also showed good acceleration to get after loose pucks (I don’t think he’s a burner but his quickness was evident). He and Lindholm seemed REALLY happy to connect on that PP goal — I think when Huberdeau says he wants Lindholm to score 50 this year he means it.
Weegar was solid and apparently his analytics were fantastic tonight. Thought he was fighting the puck a bit but it was nice seeing him able to kill plays with his speed and positioning — his rush helped to set up the Ritchie goal. Thought Rooney struggled, as did the Backlund line (no disrespect to Trevor Lewis because I thought he was okay but I’m not sure he’s suited for that role long term).
P.S. Colorado’s transition game in the neutral zone is insane, but that’s what happens when you have guys like Mackinnon (his goal tonight was filthy).

Just like in the playoffs, game 2 is now the most important
Solid win even if they almost let it get away
I don't care who you are. Any team that gets up 5-1 with a full period to play on the Cup Champs is going to get some pushback. The Aves made it closer in the end, but this game was really a blowout.

I didn't love the fourth line at all but I think that had more to do with deployment than anything. They were totally out of their depth against MacKinnon/Rantanen/Makar in the third.
The Kadri line was outstanding. Hoping to see more from Backlund and Coleman against Edmonton but I thought they were really dragged down by Lewis in transition. As it is, that line doesn't really have a natural distributor.
I still can't get over that pass Huberdeau made to set up Lindholm.

Don't want to read too much in to this stupid arbitrary streak ending...but im choosing to take it as a harbinger of things to come. New core shaking up the old flames habits already. Remains to be seen what they accomplish but I'm excited to see what it will be and am extremely happy we dumped our old tired core
Harbingers are bad, so it can't be that.

You may be the end, and that’s cool for what it’s worth. And the game I watched was tense when there was a 2 goal margin, the Avs were pressing, and nearly cut the margin to 1
I’ll buy this game. Gotta spend money to make money
This just show how stupid Oilers fans are. Their stupid team got away with a highstick penalty resulting a goal and I don't hear complain about the competency of the NHL refs.
