If and when the Flames name a captain, it will probably make a lot of sense and also probably not matter that much.

This place has gotten slack. In past times you would have been raked over the coals for turning a rando tweet into a [Rumour] announcement hype thread and it would have been closed.
Now everyone just goes along with it because past efforts and CP moderation have made stuff curated and posted here lean towards credible.

Now I feel dumb for getting excited and posting in this thread earlier.
Looks like Backlund and Tanev with a guaranteed A and maybe Kadri since he got one in in the preseason. Could also see Huberdeau swapping with Kadri home and away.

Backlund, Tanev, Kadri, Huberdeau, Lindholm. It's nice to have a core of leaders!

If it was going to be Backlund it would have happened. It will be Huberdeau, just probably not to start the season.

I agree with this. If Backlund was a slam dunk it would have been announced already. I imagine it was on hold last year pending the futures of Gaudreau and Tkachuk and now they are gone has been shifted to the incoming players signed to long term deals likely discussed during contract negotiations (it seemed to be a big deal for Tkachuk so I assume it may be important to other players that feel they can be leaders). IMO it's not great optics in the dressing room to just hand a new player that doesn't know the room, the captaincy. Likely something that the team discussed as a possibility earned over time for Huberdeau and/or Kadri.

Here’s Sutter:
“There’s no need to name one. There’s no clear-cut one. I think our 30 and older age group, we have two guys that represent us very well, as quite honest, you could say co-captains in Mikael [Backlund] and Tanny [Chris Tanev]. But I also think in that group there’s what, about seven Stanley Cups? So those guys don’t have to have a C on them. They get it. So it’s still, it’s got to come out of that 23-29 age group. You’re still looking for it.”
It makes the most sense that Andersson is the next captain if he can show the leadership and maturity in his game. Right age bracket, highly competitive.

Just pick one already. At what point is it a distraction?
Imo it feels like a sleight to the guys who are the leaders in the room. It a tradition. I think it could have benefits.

I expect at no point. The players know who their leaders are.

Then shouldn’t these players be acknowledged? Maybe the team could label it somehow… with, oh I don’t know, a “C” on their chest or something lol
It just seems silly at this point. Almost like it’s a power move from Sutter. Idk

You are really over thinking this in my opinion. The Flames had co-captains in 89 and it didn't seem to be a problem. Was that a power move by Terry Crisp or was it a veteran team and the small letter sewn onto the front of the jersey didn't matter?

Huberdeau has 30 family members in town tonight, his sister is singing the anthem & his agent is in Calgary to watch the game.. I feel like he’s coming out as the captain tonight

I feel like we are far, far more concerned about this than the Flames players and management are.
