FlamesNation Mailbag: Opening week excitement
The Calgary Flames begin their regular season on Thursday night, with a home date with the Colorado Avalanche! As we prepare for the onset of hockey excitement, we delve into the mailbag!
Calgary Flames seek to turn entertaining off-season into longer playoff run
No NHL team lost more and gained more than the Calgary Flames after their most successful season in years.
Newcomers Jonathan Huberdeau and Nazem Kadri can bring offensive firepower and other intangibles to compensate for departed wingers Johnny Gaudreau and Matthew Tkachuk. Will they?
Masterful wheeling and dealing in the off-season does not guarantee a championship, Calgary’s general manager cautioned.
“This idea of winning in the summer is a load of crap I think,” Brad Treliving said to start training camp. “You try to win in the winter.”
Avalanche chance for repeat among top storylines in NHL this season
The Avalanche are built for sustained success too. It wouldn't be surprising if they repeat as champion. But they enter the season with some concerns.
Gabriel Landeskog has a lower-body injury that goes back to last season and the forward's timetable for a return is unknown.
They have a new No. 1 goalie in Alexandar Georgiev, who replaced Darcy Kuemper, and Colorado has to find a new No. 2 center and make up for the production lost with center Nazem Kadri signing with the Calgary Flames.
NHL storylines to watch in 2022-23:
The new-look Flames
There's not a team in the NHL that had a busier offseason than the Calgary Flames. Just hours before free agency was set to open, Johnny Gaudreau informed the front office that he wasn't going to re-sign with the franchise. Then Matthew Tkachuk asked to be traded.

Probably the toughest opponent you could think of. A rather unimpressive pre season. A bunch of significant new pieces that should take time to gel.
Maybe that's the formula a=for a season opening win.

Have to take advantage of the Avs playing the night before and grind them down. Hopefully the Hawks at least make them break a sweat but it's doubtful.

landeskog and kadri are pretty big holes for the avs going into this season. they are going to be more top heavy in talent , but as long as makar and MacKinnon are there they will be a force . I am prepared for the flames to be a work in progress for the first part of the season . it will take time for them to mesh but as long as the effort and defensive work is there I'll be ok with the results taking time to come . can't speak for others though lol

I like starting against the weakened and maybe tired champs more than the Oilers like they often do. Lose, and you lost to the champs (oh well), win and you beat the champs (excellent).
I have always wanted the Flames to not play their chief rival until they had a few games under their belt, especially with a new core.

This is why they always lose the season opener, game day threads being started prior to the game day jinxes them.

Can't wait to see this team gel and just get better night in and out to provide D with the Ws he deserves.
We need a creative person to have Darryls picture holding the W while driving a combine completely entagled with barbed wire.
We have centers . We have D . Who grabs the reigns in net? I'm glad Vladar showed some promise in the preseason and that wolf may or may not provide some motivation for our 2 top goalies.
Let's pray for good health of our players . Let the good juju flow.
Remember what's best in life as instructed by Conan.
Go Flames

It’s time for the season to start and some real hockey talk again.
I think the big thing is how will Jacob Markstrom play and bounce back from last season’s playoffs. We still have a good backup in Dan Vladar. So goaltending is something to watch.
I’m not too concerned about the forward and defence group, coaching is good. Going to be a good year and I think it’s going to start with a win.
Go Flames!

Taking a while to get to 5000

Would be unfortunate if he's out, but I have total confidence in Vladar to start the year.
