Since Stone wants to be in Calgary and the Flames seemingly want him here, there's really no rush to finalize the contract until just prior to the first game he'll play in.

Okay, new question. Is there a cap advantage to waiting until the very last moment before signing Stone? Do we bank cap until he is signed or is it retroactive the moment he signs?

His contract would be “pro rated” when ever it is signed. Cap is accrued daily.

I believe the cap officially starts counting today at 5:00pm ET. If they wait to sign Stone until Thursday morning, they should accrue 3 days of extra cap space for him. It's not much, but by the deadline, it can add up.

We definitely need to add another forward to this group.

I thought they’re only allowed 23 players total including injured players.

Why would it include injured players? Having players injured shouldn't adversely affect your contract situation, and this would prevent the signing or call-up of replacement players to fill in for injured ones.

Looking forward to this team and what they can do this season. Lots of experts say good things about us but to me it doesn't look like a Stanley Cup roster for some reason.

I wonder if San Jose and Nashville could have played the Prague games with cap non-compliant rosters.

Adam Ruzicka as well even though he played 28 games last season already.

Time for some Treliving cap circumvention. Just don’t release Stone from his PTO all year and play dumb when he gets in the lineup.

Brett Ritchie is a big body extra forward.
He has a role and he doesn’t cost anything. The coach trust him for what he is.

So what is Stone getting paid while on a PTO? I have to believe he’s interested in an NHL salary.

I'm interested in an NHL salary. Alas that's not what I'm getting paid this year.
He seems to have some kind of an agreement that he will only play in Calgary, for whatever reason. Sometimes you're just not at a professional level where you can dictate where you play and early $750,000+

From what I read about other PTOs it usually pays for expanses, plus gives the player something like $500/game dressed during the preseason. That’s all I got, and anything more would only be speculation/guesstimating.

I have a question. With the AHL team in the same city, can’t the Flames only keep 20 players to save cap space? 12 F 6 D 2 G and call up for injuries. Is there a minimum number of players required?

Yes they can. The challenge would be if either team were on the road, but for stretches where both teams are at home, and especially if the Flames weren't playing, they could theoretically drop the roster to 20 to bank cap space.
The problem the Flames will have with that strategy this year, is that none of their extras are likely to clear waivers (and all would have to)
So they could, but it would be a risk

Last second roster changes are hard if the Flames are on the road in New York and the Wranglers are on the road in California... or even if only one of the teams is on the road for that matter.
