Yep, Backlund's only got two more years with the team and if they were going to name him captain, they could have done so as soon as Gio left.

I’ve always felt Tanev fits the mould but I’ve shifted to Backlund based on his loyalty, maturity and he’s put in his time. There’s no need to slap him in the face and give it to someone who’s been here two weeks.

I get it but I sense they are turning a bit of a page culture wise and contract length will be a factor. I could see Tanev as an A. Nothing against Backlund but as others have pointed out they have had lots of time to name him captain and didn't.

It also seems like Backlund has been very active in promoting Huberdeau joining the team. I'm sure Sutter also talked to guys like him Tanev and Lucic before just deciding on a captain

No, he was named in 2019. He signed with the Leafs in 2018.
