I have thought Huberdeau since he signed the extension. As soon as the trade was made Huberdeau was sporting Flames gear everywhere. Guys like Lindholm have talked about his presence and leadership since he came. I am a fan of the star player being the captain and with Huby being locked up for 9 years it makes a lot of sense for it to be him
I’d be pumped about this decision for sure. Just when I thought I was going with a Kadri jersey…
If Backlund is the obvious choice, why didn't they give it to him when Gio left? The players and mgmt know that player better than anyone, and yet he didnt get it then. It'll be Huby.
Last time they needed to name a captain I was adamant it should have been Glencross over Giordano, so I’m gonna sit this one out and let the people who know what they’re doing make the decisions.
Me too. I remember reports that Gio was the unanimous pick from within the room, which surprised me at the time. Obviously not anymore.
Totally agree that the most prolific offensive player should never automatically be named captain. I think most here agree that Gaudreau should not have been captain over the last few years despite his fantastic production. But I will say that offensive ability is linked to both internal motivation and ability to motivate others by stepping up and making a game changing play.
Big picture, I am thrilled about the tone of this discussion. When Gio left, it felt like nobody in the team was really appropriate to step up and captain the group. Backlund was the most obvious choice, but moreso by process of elimination. Now we have several genuine candidates. As Sutter and BT have mentioned, it’s not so much the letter as it is a strong leadership group, and boy has that changed in 2 years.
My guess is Huberdeau, Backlund is deserving as well but I feel like if they wanted him to be captain he would have had the captaincy last year as well.
I think it will be either Kadri or Huberdeau. I base it on Sutter saying that a captain needs to be signed long term. Moreover, we started camp with the notion there won’t be a captain, which leads me to believe it’s one of the new guys.
What is a captain these days? The face of the team? The mouthpiece of the team? Or just the guy who talks with the refs?
My two cents -- naming a captain is a bit overrated, yeah its nice to have a letter on your chest but the locker room knows who the leaders are and how they lead (verbally, by example). We seemed to do fine last year without a captain, would things have been different if someone in the locker room stood up and said "Let's go" during the playoffs?
Interestingly, if it is Backlund, I think he'd be the first non-North American born captain in Flames history.

You get to play the locker room music.

I might have missed it, but do we know for sure the announcement is to name a captain?
Unless I too missed it, we don't know for sure. There sure is a lot of hullaballoo about this though, and not just on CP. I do understand, based on Scorp's post, that the Flames are revealing their alternate jerseys today. Maybe the "top model" is the new captain?
