I can dislike Murray Edwards (and I do, for a variety of reasons which don't matter here)...and at the same time I can appreciate a few things:
- the Flames remain in Calgary
- he has given Tre the reins to spend, not only on players, but on management (Yay -- Darryl!!)
- if the stories can be believed, he hammered JG pretty hard for leaving the Flames in a crap position until the 11th hour

The arena issue is a different kettle of fish. Capital vs. Operating. Future vs today.

(And the whole thing about CNRL, among others, taking "government money" isn't on Murray: if governments are stupid enough to give away our money to undeserving parties...that's on them, not the people taking the funds. And it's on us, for not putting our collective feet on the throats of Pols at all levels and telling them to stop it. There is no "government money"...there is only "taxpayer money", and it's OURS.)

No not good discussion. You started a thread expressing some sincere thanks to an ownership group showing strong confidence in management by allowing them to do the things to build a winning team including inking long term contracts to players who have never worn a Flames jersey and get crapped on for supporting billionaires who are accused of holding fans random by demanding public funds to support their hobby.

Amazes me that there are “fans” on this board who would really like to see Edwards and the partners sell or move the team.

Well, you can continue to worship billionaires who actively make your life worse and don’t care about you. I’ll continue to think it’s pretty lame and think it’s sad that you’ve been brainwashed to love people that despise you.

Also, what fans want to see the team move? I’ve literally never even seen anyone advocate for that on CP.

"Ransom" I assume...but anyway.

It's a forum. There will always be agreement, disagreement and distraction. If you don't like it, I guess don't read it or don't post? Yah. Agree. It sucks.

But that's the way it is.

Wow...that's quite a take!

So, saying thank you to someone means that you "worship" them. Huh. Never knew that.

And billionaires all "despise" us peons.

And Murray Edwards (among others) is apparently "actively working to make (my) life worse"! Wow...I'd be surprised if M.E. even knew me...although I've met both him and Heather quite some years back.

Sounds like someone has issues to me. And I'm pretty clear that they are YOURS and not mine. I'd bet that they aren't the OP's either.

until we see a stanley cup i'm not thanking anyone. In the 90's we never lost 2 100 point players in 1 off season, we had to bring in big players to replace that.

I would like to thank Budweiser for always putting beer in their cans and never milk, orange juice, or even poison. I appreciate that you deliver a product I am willing to pay for (ideally heavily discounted) and not canned milk, which is not appealing to me.

Thank you Budweiser, the beer company, for producing safely consumable beer.

Thank you, Little Caesar’s, for putting pepperoni on your pepperoni pizzas. I appreciate that you haven’t stopped putting pepperoni on the pizzas so that when I order a pepperoni pizza there is pepperoni on it. Truthfully, I don’t think I would enjoy it if you marketed a pepperoni pizza to me and what I got was actually a cheese pizza, or a round thing of dough with just sauce.

Thank you Little Caesar’s, the pizza company, for providing pizza that matches the description of what the pizza is.

Thank you, Flames ownership group, for icing an NHL hockey team for me to watch. I appreciate that you ice a full team, and not just 5 or 6 players. I also appreciate that these players know how to play hockey and aren’t lumberjacks or plumbers who do not play hockey professionally. Thank you for not icing a team of 5 or 6 tradesmen who do not play hockey professionally as I would not enjoy paying any money for that and probably would not.

Thank you, NHL hockey team, for being an NHL hockey team.

My ignore list is growing rapidly.

Appreciation is apparently lost on some people. (Maybe they should switch to being fans of the No Goods?)

I’m not sure “Oiler fans aren’t writing thank yous to ownership for icing a hockey team” is a burn on anyone you’re attempting to burn on.

Worship or despise. So much for any semblance of a reasonable discussion.

Thanking the owners is like thanking Galen Weston for owning grocery stores and graciously allowing us to shop there. I just use that as an example since I just saw one of his godawful commercials.
You spend a lot of time of Loblaws messages boards too?

Default Thank-You Ownership Group

Someone very much in the know told me that the team makes negligible returns for the regular season. I think he said around 5% but he may have said 10%. It’s the home playoff games that make the juice. Which makes sense - the team’s biggest expense is payroll, which doesn’t change whether the team makes the playoffs or not. Aside from random performance bonuses I suppose. There’s also random one off things like expansion fees that can provide a nice bump to the regular bottom line.

Granted, this person could have been lying to me outright. But he is not that kind of person.

In regards to the franchise value itself, yes that is a big part of it too. The caveats there though are that obviously there’s no liquidity on that until they sell the team. And, while it sounds like a big gain if you say an owner bought the team for 200M and now it’s worth 1B or whatever, that’s usually over a very long period like 20 years. So the annualized return or IRR isn’t nearly as high as you’d think. I ran the numbers a bunch of years ago using estimates on the Flames and I think the IRR was like 10%. You can make that in the stock market with full liquidity.

I’m not saying that it’s not a good investment, or that the owners are doing us a favour, or that we despise them, or they despise us, or whatever. I don’t personally care about any of that, I like watching hockey so I’ll pay to watch hockey up to a certain amount. Im just saying from a moderately informed opinion, I don’t think it’s nearly as lucrative as people think.

The Panthers had to open their books because of public funding.

Hockey loses money, running the arena for other events easily makes up for it in Florida’s case.

After all I did for him. This hurts.
