Flames Thank-You Ownership Group

I felt this needed to be talked about. We should thank the ownership for the go ahead on the signing of all these big deals. I remember the nineties when the flames stars were all leaving because the flames were not willing to dish out the big bucks. This is a big commitment from owners. I don't agree with how the team has been built but i am just going to enjoy it. I believe you build a team by scouting, drafting and developing well. Being patient is also a key. From the foundation up. Its not about being good for a couple of years you want to be good for a number of years. This is not the flames way.No rebuild here. Unlike some franchises the owners are willing to dish out the money to win. You want three things out of an ownership group. Patience, willingness to win and money. At least we have two out of three.

Not going to thank billionares who want public funds for their own building.

You shouldn’t either.

And if you think they are being “generous” or whatnot with their spending on the team, I got news for you.

It’s called “revenue sharing”.

The Hitmen and Stamps have made more money than the Flames the last 5 years. We're lucky the owners spend to the cap knowing they will most likely lose money.

I agree. Gave Treliving the rope to go out and be awesome.

Good for them.

We have a good ownership group in place, we are lucky in that regards for sure.

If you don't think public funds should be used on an Event Centre, that's very cool. But you also shouldn't expect billionaires to flush a billion dollars of their own money down the toilet either just cause they might have it. You should just accept we won't have NHL hockey in Calgary because it's losing proposition when massive capital outlays are required to keep the team moving forward. And that is also a 100% ok opinion, it's not what I want for the city, but it's certainly a valid point of view. But don't be ignorant about the data and position it like it's a greedy ownership group trying to squeeze more profits by using public funds.

Just one more big deal left to sign... Let's hope it gets done before the end of the year, so we can finally see shovels in the dirt in the new year.

Since the salary cap was implemented the ownership group has always allowed the GM to spend to the max limit. We hear these rumblings like the team won’t want to do max term, big bonuses, eat salary in a trade and all of those have been proven false.

Someone with more accounting knowledge would be better to speak to this, but much of the 'operating income' can be made to look however you want it to look with a good accounting team for tax purposes depending on how you handle your financials.

A league bringing in $4-5B annually, and a Flames franchise worth $700M with estimated revenues of $177M must be doing something really poor if they are still finding ways to lose millions of dollars a year.

To me it's more thank you to them for not taking us fans for granted. We loyally support this team and want to be cheering a winner, but we also turn up in bad times. Rather than doing just enough, doing the big things here

I’m not sure we have to thank the owners for being competent. I mean, I guess it’s better than being terrible but that’s a low bar.

Or if you flip it around. You should be thanking them that a city of Calgary's size can even get an Event Centre of that calibre half paid for by a billionaire that otherwise would have been FULLY paid for by public dollars (or not even built at all).

The CBA has very strict reporting requirements for HRR. That forces accounting to be pretty well standardized across the league.

Earnings in the NHL, as reported by Forbes over many years, pretty closely follow a Pareto distribution, with 20% of the teams making 80% of the profit. At last report, Covid notwithstanding, the Original Six teams plus L.A. were highly profitable; a big tranche of smaller-market teams (including Calgary) were operating at break-even or a little better, depending on playoff performance; and about ten teams at the bottom were losing money. Half of the reported profits were earned by just three teams – Toronto, Montreal, and the Rangers.

How much the league brings in is irrelevant, since seven big-market teams are taking in the lion's share of that revenue.

I'd like to see a source for that revenue estimate. I have never seen a number that high linked to the Flames.
