Big money. Only good thing is he is only 25 so he has plenty of time to earn it.

He is 25. He scored 85 before. There is some potential in him. 60 is not his limit

But an overpay today isn't an over pay in the new cap. Agents know this and factor it in to new contracts.

The last 5 years the cap has been flat. In the last 8 years the cap has only had 1 big jump.

In other sports the cap has had massive jumps and teams that signed their players before these jumps have had huge success. Golden State Warriors were one team that comes to mind that had all their guys signed to big contracts under the old cap and then cap exploded and they won championship after championship with players grossly under paid.

Barzal's contract will be an overpay for 1 year at least but cap increases do change the value of all existing contracts

Definitely a talented player, and his highlights are great to watch. But I wouldn't want him as my 1st line C if I was trying to build a winner.

Fair price probably, but glad the Flames aren't paying it.

Compare this to Kadri at $7M.

LOL. 62 pt pace is his career low. He's been a 66+ pt pace the other 4/5 years.

He's missed like 11 games in his career, and 9 of them were last year. People not understanding the two shortened seasons is a real gear grinder.

Which isn't to say this might not be an overpayment, but calling him a 60 pt player is a silly round down.

I agree and Kadri contract is better now but Barzal kicks in next year so the first 6 years of Barzal deal vs the last 6 years of Kadri's deal isn't a win for the Flames for all 6 years.

NYI isn't going all in for a championship right now so it makes sense for them and Kadri makes sense for us

Barzal seems to contribute to the score sheet in the playoffs.

Are the Islanders ever going for a championship?

Maybe not but I'm sure their management is planning for it.

I actually really like their defense and goaltending. The contracts they have on defense combined with their age is lining up for long term success.

They have 5 aging forwards that make a combined $28 mil.

Lee
Bailey
Pageau
Nelson
Palmieri

They need to replace the cap they spend on these guys on younger better players but with Barzal signed for 9 more years they have time to build still.

NYI did lose to Tampa in the conference finals 2 years in a row. You can make a case they are outperforming the Flames over the last 5 years

They made the CFs twice in a row and had a 13 game road trip to start last season. Rumours of their demise are greatly exaggerated (probably)

Strikes me as an overpay. Yes, he is talented, but he doesn't produce like an elite-level player, but is now being paid as such.

Barzal is an interesting case. He has elite-level skill, and his numbers are solid. He is a #1 center, but definitely not an elite-level #1 center. Now he is being paid as one. I guess with the expectation that salaries are going to take a big jump in the upcoming seasons, this contract might be fine. I don't think it will ever be considered a great deal, however.

I have wondered how Barzal would do with some better offensive players to play with. Maybe he is an actual elite player, rather than a good player with some fancy elite-level skills (if you get what I mean).

I wonder if Islanders thought his point total takes a big leap this season out of Trotz system and were worried if he put up 80+ they would have has to pay a lot more

I think it's more that they simply wanted to get it done before the season to avoid it becoming a distraction and ensuring that he doesn't get close enough to free agency where he decides to test the waters. It will be interesting to see if there's a bit of a correction in league scoring this season after last season as even if he has a better season he may not hit 80 points.

They’ll pay someone to take Khudobin I think.

That is terrible. Over $9M for a second line C being fed first C minutes. This guy is ridiculously overrated, kind of reminds me of Taylor Hall.

When he first came in he had that 85 point season. Since then he has been a 60+ point C with a very low GAF meter. He is making about 2.15M a year more than he should and that might be generous.

He has a career 0.86 points per game
Huberdeau is 0.91 points per game

I actually think this kid is super underrated.

He needs better wingers to play with and a more offensive system.
