Teams often have success in spite of players. They clearly realized it was an issue because they traded for two forwards at the deadline.
Wouldn't be surprised if we see similar transactions this year.

I have to assume a trade is coming. There's no way Kevin Rooney should be playing top 9 on this team.

The posters that think he's finished before he was even given a shot are the same posters who would have been negative about Johnny making it in the NHL. And no, I'm not saying their talent is comparable, but Phillips has some grit that Johnny lacks to make up for it. I hope he is dominant enough in the AHL that he forces a call-up. Either that, or a team claims him and he becomes the next player that got away. I'm not saying I believe he will definitely succeed in the NHL, but I would not be surprised if he did.
Give the kid a chance.

Agreed, I am of the same opinion. Maybe put him in a situation where it is his to lose. Who knows maybe Jonathan, and Elas would be excellent guys to complement and bring along a guy like Phillips. Hopeful he will get an opportunity at some point. Sutter is big on experience which doesn't do Phillips any favors.

I like Phillips and I think he can be an NHL player but I think it's fairly obvious he was only ever going to make this team if he took a job on Kadri's wing.
It's tough to slot Phillips in anywhere else in the top 9 because the Backlund and Lindholm lines are going to eat a lot of matchups against other teams top lines and I don't believe that's an area where you're going to get Phillips to succeed.
Guys like Eakin, Rooney and Ritchie aren't going to get a lot of love but they're built to play limited 4th line minutes. Phillips is basically top 6 or bust.
Injuries happen and if he clears waivers this time around, he will get his looks as the season rolls on. Just because he doesn't make the roster out of camp doesn't mean he won't have an impact later.

Phillips I don't think did enough to stand out - I think he needed to come out and be more of a factor. Definitely some bright spots, but not nearly enough to warrant a longer look. Now he just needs to work hard and wait for a call-up. I would be surprised if someone claimed him at this point, but stranger things have happened I guess.

Klapka doesn't require waivers. He just signed his ELC this year so that's why he doesn't need to go through waivers. Sutter also mentioned some of the ELC players outplaying the players that are still at camp but being sent down due to being on an ELC and age.

No worry on today waiver
Not a surprise really. Sutter prefers the Ritchie, Lewis, Eakin, Rooney over fringe young players.
Only surprise is Milano is still around. Dude should have never been invited.

They talked about a hole on the roster, and yet they never even tried anyone out instead rolling lineups of AHL guys. If you want to see what they can do, you might want to play them with the guys they are to play with and not random combinations of AHL guys, and Eakins.

Eakins has had a better camp than Phillips did though so not sure what you are going about on here.

If you don't need the cap space, no reason to put a player on LTIR. It's not like you can bank that space.

As has Rooney...people have biases towards draft picks and players they have followed longer
Rooney has been one of the best players in camp

No he hasn't. He also doesn't provide the team anything we need, we have enough Eakin players. I'm also not advocating for Phillips, but no offensive player truly got a real chance.

Eakins on the 4th line is a small problem. Rooney on the 3rd line is the bigger problem
There should be only 1 spot between Eakins and Rooney.

This is the biggest issue.
Rooney in your top 9 is a fail, no matter how you spin it.
That 9th spot is better used on a Zary, Pelletier, Klapka.
I hope it’s just a placeholder otherwise that’s disappointing.

Why would you put any of those three players on a 3rd line shutdown role on a SC contending team? If this team was rebuilding ok, doing so on this squad would be foolish. Rooney fits on that 3rd line like a glove.

Sutters comments.
Basically says some guys sent down out performed guys left in camp but because of contracts they get sent down. Not sure how that is a good message to send when Treliving said the exact opposite.
|
I wonder if he was referencing McLain and Sutter who outperformed a bunch of guys with 2-way contracts even though they only have AHL contracts and knew their destiny

Rooney has been better than all those guys, no spin needed he has flat out played better
